Quota crank "high tide mark"
« on: November 23, 2018, 09:42:17 PM »
I acquired a '96 Quota 1000 a couple of months ago, parked up for the last 5 years, and so spent a busy two weeks getting it serviced and farkeled up for a 6 week trip on the North Island, for the Guzzi club of Victorias Spaghetti Rally and the Philip island Moto GP.

Part of getting it going again was pulling the sump, to change the filter and clean out the sludge, and I found this.

Note the build up on the forward crank throw, the tappets had just been set so the crank was at TDC Dexter, which evidently was where it was at the time this occurred.
The usual amount of "dirty" oil came out, and there is no equivalent high tide mark on the inside of the crank case or on the oil pump mounting bolt ends.

Not to start an oil thread, but I run 15W 40 Diesel engine oil in most of my Guzzi's and Airhead BMW's. The reason I mention this is I want to see if the high detergent action of the Diesel engine oil removes the observed buildup, but due to only getting home again last week, and doing battle with my Galletto, I haven't had a chance to service the Quota again, due after 7000 k's around the Australian high country, so don't have "after" photos, yet.

Lots of sludge.

All clean now.

In its natural environment.

The fuel injection system handled the high country fine, the highest point in all of Australia is 2200 meters, and is about 100 k's from here.

Are those pit marks?  One reason to park on the centerstand.
