What kind of racket is this?

My G-5 makes a rattling noise down near the transmission area. It goes away when I pull the clutch in. What is going on down there? Do I want to know?

Sounds normal for a Guzzi, my Griso (50k km) sounds like an old threshing machine that hasn't been lubed in 20 years, the sound disappears over 1500 revs

Tis normal.

There is a cup, that lays in the pressure plate. When you pull the clutch lever, it presses the cup, and it is quiet. When the lever is released, the cup can rattle a bit in the hole it sits in.

Whenever I am in there, I put a bit of RTV on the cup. Mainly to hold it in place while I assemble it, but the side benefit is that there is no more rattle.

It's normal, there is a floater, two fiber discs and a transmission drive gear , eight or ten springs and a pressure plate
And the cup Wayne refers to but I've not used RTV there, couldn't hurt

Same clutch on V700s, Ambos, Eldos, V7 Sports... I have yet to hear the noise described from any of those.

Maybe increase the idle speed a bit?

My 07 CalVin rattled when the clutch was engaged but only until it warmed up then quite as a church mouse.

If your idle is low and the transmission is in neutral each power pulse will cause the gears and drive dogs to bounce off each other creating an annoying racket. It's more prevalent when the oil is warm and thin. Pulling in the lever disconnects the gear stack from the engine's power pulses and all is silent.

Boost the RPM a bit to lessen the pulsing rotation. Be sure that you are running a sufficient quantity of the appropriate oil.
