1400 question
« on: March 14, 2019, 10:43:14 AM »
Have a question for you 1400 owners. I'm getting ready to do a service on my 2015, 1400 tourer. Two questions,
1- with only 5K since last valve check should this be done?
2- if so, will I need a set of gaskets on stand by?
    Thanks in advance:)

#2 You know how it goes, if you have the gaskets on hand you wont need them, but if you don't then you will need them.

The service manual says "A" each 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles)

Mine were right in the middle at 1,000 miles.   Sitting at 4,400, so I'd be interested to see what you find out.

Get a gasket set.  You'll use them sooner or later.

You know how that goes - if you don't check them, then it'll drive ya crazy.

Fortunately, checking valve clearances isn't that hard of a job.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

I used to use those crappy brown ones (now I know why they were brown..!)
Had nothing but trouble with leaks.
I began using the green ones, I think they are Valpolini but maybe not.
Anyway, I remove the valve covers every 20,000 to (unnecessarily) check the clearances. So from 80,000 to 160,000 that’s 4 times and I just whack the covers back on with the old existing ones and nip them up evenly.
There have been no leaks...period.
I used to think people who said they re used gaskets were talking BS....
I bought 3 sets of the good ones last time I was in Agostini’s which has proven a waste of time and money, but I think I just needed an excuse to go in and walk around.
I take a spare set each time I go to Europe, they’ve done 60,000 k and never been warm...

good information.  I've always had MFM do mine, but now looks like I'm on my own.  Well, not really, considering all you guys...

Cali 1400 has quality rubber type valve cover gaskets.  You shouldn't need to change them.  I purchased a set when I first bought a 1400, still not taken out of their packets.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and called Curt at Harpers today and got a set coming in the event one ever does spring a leak. However I'll probably not fool with the valves until next service. Thanks again guys👍
