Loose/detached tach counterweight??

Can anyone describe the symptoms of a loose/detached tach counterweight (this is on a '99 Bassa); tach needle will remain steady to about 3200 rpm, thereafter, it may randomly bounce/fluctuate from 3200 to 5000.  I know Veglia does not have a good track record for reliability and this one very well could be toast, but, before I declare it DOA, IF it is simply a counterweight issue, I'd like to attempt a fix.  What say you??

You can hear the counterweight rattling around if it's detached.

   I re-attatched the counter weight with JB Weld. Never fell off again.

And it will point to a different number depending on the angle you hold it, it should always point to zero if the balance weight is in place.

does it rattle?  You should be able to hear the counterweight if it comes off.  That's only way you'll know for sure.  Take it off and shake it, actually you don't need to shake it, just the simple act of handing it should suffice.

Simply epoxy it back.  The bezzle is whole 'nother kettle of fish.

Otherwise, you might send it to this guy for repair.

If you don't think it's a counterweight issue (I think if it was it wouldn't be random but always offset) take a look at the attached.

The Tach (item 9) needs 12 Volts from the Red/Black wire and a good ground, either of these could be intermittent, I would first check the ground perhaps with a jumper lead in parallel.
To check the positive perhaps a small 12 Volt lamp to the two terminals, if the light stays On while the Tach is playing up that would be eliminated, just grounding out the neutral switch for an hour or so, this will check the Red/Black power as the light will stay on.

The other wire it needs is pulses from the ECU via 1 way connector 61, I doubt it's that but you never know.

You might see if the counterweight is rattling around in there.  Did anyone mention that?

For the sake of finality on this thread, I added a dedicated ground wire from the tach to the frame (as suggested in numerous other threads pertaining to this subject) and all seems to be back in order for now.  Given the known failure of Veglia tachs, perhaps I can get a little more use out of this one before total meltdown occurs.  Thanks to all for your help.
