Another earthquake out here.
« on: April 13, 2019, 11:02:12 PM »
5.2  WHoooo hooooo!  Lasted for about 5 longgggg seconds.  No damage but I could see the ceiling swaying.  I have an open beam ceiling in the living room.  I'll have to check the garage to see if any of the bikes fell over.     Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Hopefully everyone and everything is all right! That's bordering on what they consider destructive. (5.5 to 8.9)

Have you got a time or better a US geological link? Our sensors at work may have picked it up.... In Perth Western Australia.

Did you know Jerry Lee Lewis's son was not only a musician, he was an actor too?

It would put it E of here.  Felt strong enough to get your attention.   No damage or bikes taking a nap.   There is the Rift zone that has a crack in the island going WNW for miles.  Supposedly it could completely crack and the West side of the island will slide into the ocean.  It would generate a ginormous tsunami that would affect the West Pacific.  My mortgage companies would be bummed.

Grew up in Hilo. Been through a few. Our intermediate and high schools were old wooden structures that would sway like palm trees. Our joke as kids was if the termites stop holding hands, the buildings will collapse for sure!

Tom good to hear you and bikes are fine. As a mainlander living in Mn I’m curious, is there any correlation between volcanic activity and Quakes? Does one precede the other, or affect the magnitude of either event?

Not to sound selfish, but I hope the island holds off on self destructing until August. I'm coming out in July. Glad you and the bikes are good Tom.

Hualalai is due for a wakeup any time now. In 1929 it experienced a month long swarm of
small earthquakes, It's last eruption was in 1801.  It is on a 200 to three hundred year cycle of eruptions.  It has been 218 years since the last one so it is due for another.
There is also the possibility of a slump into the ocean in that area.  You could end up being a beach front area or worse.  If that were to occur the airport would likely be under water.

to better understand the area, I included a link to the USGS with the map of the island.  As long as there is an outlet to relieve the pressure then I'm okay in Kona.  All the activity is on the SE side.  An answer to the question of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.  http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/how-are-volcanoes-and-earthquakes-related

Ryan....sounds like Hilo High School/Intermediate School.  Really old wood structures intermixed with old style concrete bldgs.

Jim, any luck with finding someone for the ceremony?

The earthquake out here not related to tectonic plates shifting.  More of the movement is from magma trying to make it to surface for an eruption.  Kind of in the thinking that all apples are fruit but not all fruit are apples.     Confused?  So am I.....SE is where the action is on this island.  So.........as long as there's an outlet for lava to flow, the pressure is being relieved so that there won't be any explosive eruptions 120+ mile away to the NW where I live.

That was for me, daughter wanted to renew vows out there. No update that I'm aware of I think they are still looking.

Only thing I can think of is for them to contact a church directly and see if it can be scheduled directly with them.

The first concrete structure at Hilo Intermediate was the cafeteria. We had a beauty of a quake in the late 70s. Every wood structure was fine. The cafeteria broke free the foundation, moved about six inches off the slab.
