What a way to start a day!! Battery dead

So i had a appointment to get my state inspection done yesterday..  Get all dressed, roll the bike out... click click...  WHAAA!!  So hook up the charger and wait a bit..  still just click and check volts...  12 before trying to start.. then drops down to 9 right after...  DOUGHH  shes dead! Its a new to me bike, and I had no idea how old the battery was, so im not that surprised. Soooooo... now I get to play the "try to explain the bike I have to the counter guy.." game that all of us Guzzi owners know so well. I helped him find the model.. 02 California stone.... and tell him that his listings were wrong. All they showed was the bigger battery, not that smaller ones that bikes with the evap system have... Im not sure the one I took out was right.... so I couldn't give that number..So long story short i take over his computer,[ im a old parts guy from way back..] Search through all the Guzzis of that era, and find a listing for a '10 cal vin that has the smaller battery..  I remember reading here about some people running the CalVin batteries in the older bikes because it has a little more capacity.. so I went with it!  Sadly the days of the 30 buck motorcycle batteries are gone...  so $115 later I got my new AGM battery that fits the box better then what I took out!!  Got it in, and the bike to the shop, and passed with flying colors!!  Another great day of Guzzi wrenching!!

The new battery is a Duralast gold AGM part #ETX20L.  It was listed for the 2010 CalVin models. Fit perfect in the smaller box that the bikes with the emission canister have.

Easy to diagnose what's wrong, at least if it was here at my place.  We were just chuckling at breakfast about what happens when you get geared up & dressed before you start your bike...

Serious- At the shop around 2006-07, soon after the price of all scrap went through the roof, we started noticing batteries would last around 4 yrs.  too many would then die almost overnight. Some last a few more years like champs.  Some didn't last for the first 4 years.   No matter how long they lasted, the drop-off was not gradual & once they failed to hold an adequate charge there was no way to make or keep them viable.  Our Tucker Rocky rep will now fully warranty a Yuasa battery for one year from date of purchase- no prorating and no questions.  Others might be warrantied as well, but Yuasa is our preferred quality brand.

So we scribe the install date on every new Yuasa battery at the shop. Regardless of whether it's a materials issue, manufacturing issue or both, we advise anyone with a battery that's 4 yrs old to get a new one or be prepared for a prompt failure at any time.

My Daytona's Motobatt lasted 6 years 3 months so I'm not complaining.

I really wasnt wanting to spend the money..  but I was not surprised. As ive said.. i just got the bike in Dec, and it sat all winter, and Ive had to charge it a few times....  so it was coming..  It kinda came out of the money that I was setting aside to buy my carb sync gauges, and cables for guzziDiag though...  So for now... enjoying the ride!
