Cali 1400 stop light wiring
« on: July 17, 2019, 05:54:08 PM »
Hi all,
I just received a stop light strobe (LSC 100A, from superbrightLEDs), I can spend some time following the wiring loom for the stop lights or, ask if someone here knows the location and color of the stop light wire.  I already have a wiring diagram, but it does not show the accessible location for the wire(s).
Does anyone know the location and color of the stop light wire?  It would save me a bunch of time.  (2015 Cali 1400 tour)

Thanks for any input.

Be well,
DougG

OK,
After some investigation, I have found that the yellow/green wire (under the seat) is the hot connected to brake lever and foot brake, and dark green is the ground.  In the next couple of days I will install the flasher unit and report.  (With pics, if it works...I don't know if the can bus will be happy.)

You realize that the brake switches are wired to the dash it has extra wires that are used for error checking.
You cannot just add hardware to this complex wiring.
There is no direct wiring from the switches to the lamps like we are used to.

Can you keep the flasher to add to another bike with normal wiring?

You might be able to isolate it by including a transistor or FET to monitor the stop light circuit, so a high impedance is presented to the monitoring circuit which hopefully the system will not notice.  Then use the output of the transistor or FET to drive your new stop light system.

But why?  Don't you think the brake lights are bright enough?  Messing around with the wiring for no real reason might mean it will retaliate and bite you on the bum.

Part of the bum-biting might be to render the cruise control inoperable and stick a bloody great 'Service' warning up on the dash.

I added a Superbright LED tail/brake strobe unit to my touring in 2013. Tapped the wires under the rear mudguard. Everything has worked correctly since - 47,000km.

Thanks Stephen,

That's good to know.  I found the wires under the seat and will attempt to install the strobe.  I understand the concern about the can bus system and will report on whether it worked or not.

Hi all,
I finished the installation of the stop light strobes on my '15 Cali 1400 Tour (LCS-100A from superbrightleds.com).  After calling they said that I only needed one for both lights but I bought two and wired them separately for each light.  The total cost was $14.43 for two units and tax.  They work great.  I am attaching a pic.  I tried to attach a video of them in operation, but it said that it was not the right format.  It took about an hour, but that was mainly due to the fact that after working in a Physics lab for 36 years, I have learned to stop and test after each step.  Therefore, if anything goes wrong, you know where to start looking.  The only snag was that two of the bolts that held the battery cover were stripped.  I assume that happened when the dealer installed the battery.  My left-hand drill bits got a workout but all went out well.  NO ISSUES with the can bus system but I'll take it for a ride tomorrow to be sure.

If anyone is curious about any details, send me a PM.
Thanks to Tom and Stephan for their input.
Be well,
DougG

Congratulations you seem to have pulled it off  :thumb:
I'm not sure how you wired it, please document it well for the benefit of others.

BTW I was not concerned about CanBus, I think you may have wired your flasher into the brake switch wiring, I worry about possibly upsetting the ABS.

Hi Roy and Pete,

I took the bike out for a 40 mile spin this AM.  Thanks to you both for your input and concerns.

Roy - no ABS light and the system works fine (I tested it on my gravel driveway.)

Pete - After 40 miles and several stops (engine on and off) it seemed fine...HOWEVER, I pulled it into the garage and shut it off.  I re-started it to move it about 5 min later and I got a solid red triangle and service warning.  This happens intermittently on my bike ('15 Cali 1400 Tour).  As usual, I cycled the ignition 5-6 times and it went out.  About 20 min later, I went out and turned the ignition on/off, several times, and there was no warning - all seemed well.  We'll see.  I will report to the group as I use the bike more.

Thanks again.

Be well,
DougG

What error codes are you getting? My thoughts are this is not related to your thingummy installation. Has all the signs of a demand sensor problem.

Hi Pete,
I believe I have to use Guzziidiag, to get the error codes.  I have the cables and the program but I haven't gotten up the nerve to connect everything to find out yet.  Can I get the codes without messing with my ECU?  If so, I'll try it.  The bike runs great...I just have to cycle the ignition occasionally.  I don't want to mess it up.

Be well,
DougG

Hi all,
I rode the bike yesterday ('15 Cali 1400 Tour), switched the ignition on/off several times...no problems, no errors and the lights work perfectly...four quick flashes followed by four longer flashes and steady on.  I will pursue the 'red triangle' gremlin as I have time and opportunity and will report.

Be well,
DougG

P.S.  Thanks Dan, I appreciate your council, it was good talking to you.
