Calvin hack 7:33 swap
« on: August 12, 2020, 04:31:09 PM »
I am trying to work out how to swap an EV spoked alloy tubeless rim AND a lemans 7:33 rear drive on to my 09 California Vintage sidecar project.  So far I have replaced the lemans rear hub press in spacer with an ev1100 version.  That speed the ev wheel to the lemans rear drive with the proper spacing.  I next installed an aluminum spacer (mg cycle) between the rear drive box and the swingarm, which had the effect of lengthening the swingarm just enough for the axle to go through straight.

Upon buttoning everything up I found that an additional spacer was needed on the right (caliper) side of the axle.  With this spacer in place the wheel is no longer centered under the fender....it looks like in order for the wheel to be centered it would have to move about 10 mm to the left (which cannot happen without moving the hub out of the rear drive.

Finally my question:  should I be concerned that the rear wheel is 10 mm out of line with the front wheel?  If so....will I need a different swingarm to make it all work?  Sure would like to have the ev tubeless wheel and a lower ratio rear drive for the sidecar.   HELP!    Thanks!  Wayne

You shouldn't have needed the 2 mm shim for between the rear drive and swingarm. That is only necessary when an early (drum-brake) rear drive is used with a later (disk-brake) swingarm, which wouldn't apply in your case.

There is also two different splined hubs for the rear drive - the early type ('67-'01) which only sticks out a few mm from the seal and the later type ('02 onward) that protrudes considerably more. You might need to use the later hub (should be in the Cal Vin rear drive) and also the longer central spacer (also in the Cal Vin rear drive).

I'd suggest re-lacing the wheel to offset the rim to compensate for the misalignment. It's certainly easy to say! I know it can be done I just don't know if you can do it with the existing spokes.

FWIW, I had a 7;33 rear drive on my Cali aluminum sidecar rig. I absolutely loved the 7:33 gears and prefer them even without a  hack. First gear is much better for takeoff, and highway cruising in 5th gear was fine. I did have to install a different speedometer drive gear to get the speedo to read fairly accurately.

Oh, I forgot to ask...What kind of sidecar are you mounting to the CalVin? Got any pics?
Thanks
Rick.

Reshim the gear in the original box.

I don't understand the need for the shim on the caliper side.
