Living  in the east of England I am literally surrounded by old WW2 air bases. The local vilage pub was near to a American base (Saltby)  Next door to the pub lives a guy who lived in the pub during the war. I asked him what is was like with all  those US servicemen drinking the night way. He said the pub was very quiet due to beer rationing, which dispelled a few local myths.
How the aircraft missed one another always amazes me. There was a airfield every five miles or so, leading upto D-day it must have been organised chaos.

That was absolutely fantastic.  The ghosts of Tommy McGuire and Richard Bong, among others, and Doolittle live on!
I could almost see my father in the left chair in the 24 and 25, both of witch he flew in the USSAC out of Darwin in The Big One.  44 combat missions.

Thanks, I especially like the Storch.  20 or 30 years ago I almost bought a kit out of Australia,  3/4 scale I think, to build one with a Guzzi engine option. If I had, I wonder if it would have been completed by now

There are a *lot* of 3/8" diameter tubes in that sucker..  For sure, you would have been a very good welder by now.

So where to start, where the welds don't show to hide them until I got proficient with a torch, or in plain sight so they can be inspected easily.  I'd probly just start and see how it went. Then after its done , learning to land it, they won't just land with that much lift.  I'm too old to start on it now but I should have....

Read an account of a Storch landing on a downtown Paris street to pick up some high ranking officers when the Germans were losing Paris. A P-51 spotted it and dived after it. The Storch noticed, took off and just kept flying and turing down streets making itself a very difficult target. The P-51 ran out of ammo without downing the Storch. Me thinks there must have been a lot of .50 caliber damage in downtown Paris that day.

I've always told guys to start at the tail. This is after tacking the whole thing up. You learn a *lot* by doing that. As you work forward into the higher stressed areas, you'll be getting better.

I think Otto Skorzeny (Nazi) flew one of these to where Mussolini had been sequestered by the Allies, and with its STOL capabilities, was able to get in and get out.
