Hydro looper done
« on: August 15, 2019, 01:55:45 PM »
Well, just finished it. I started yesterday morning pulling the blown motor. It was a 98EV but with the distributor/points and carbs. Since the hydro is newer, I needed the ECU but I cleared out all wiring except for the wires for the coils, the trigger and the two wires needed to power the ECU. Then a few months ago, I was shown the guzzidiag basics and managed to load a ignition curve similar to older tontis.
It runs amazing! I think my advance on my old distributor was shot because this thing pulls harder. It is really weird riding a loop that is mostly quiet.
I am thrilled!
JB

Well done JB, marrying the old to the new with partial electronics is quite a feat. At some point, if you wanted  would you be able to run fuel injection off that ecu?

I wouldn't even consider it. Carbs get better mileage and silky smooth.

Congrats!!

I'm considering doing this myself. I was thinking about keeping it FI. What oil pan did you use?

Could you add a pic of the oil pan to ground clearance and the mod you did to mount the front of the engine? Did you use the one listed with dimensions on I think Benders site?

Thank you,

Mad Skillz,     I just read through your post about the other engine blowing up, prompting this fix; glad you were able to get stopped under control safely.

I am in awe of the militaristic, utilitarian aspect of the whole bike, with no attention paid to asthetics (unless that "look" was your goal...). Function over form. Reminds me of a well-used Army helicopter.

Can you briefly explain the shrouds over your air cleaners? I'm sure that was discussed previously on this board, but I missed it; I haven't seen pics of anything similar before. Are they re-purposed consumer-product lids of some sort, and do they restrict airfow, or was that the point?

Since I am putting a disc rear on my 75T, I decided to use the cush drive on the loop. Quieter when shifting. Also, new tires.

always liked your post apocalyptic expression of function and the bike's evolution as circumstances have influenced the changes. I just noticed the pipes (no mufflers) for the first time. Any video available of that thing running? Great job!

I will try. If I am riding easy, it's a fraction as loud as a harlie. You would never know there were straight pipes on it.

I’ve seen this bike at the Slimey Crud Run but was never able to find the owner. Same guy I sold the R5 pipes to?
