V65 Speedometer cable replace
« on: August 10, 2019, 04:40:13 PM »
Ciao Guzzisti,
I have this kind of instrument panel on a V65.  I need to replace the speedometer cable.  I am not sure how to open the speedometer housing.
I removed the screw at the bottom of the housing, but it doesn't slide out.
It seems I have to remove the handlebar clamp in the middle.  Has anyone ever done this?

Thanks,

There are screws inside of the plastic square to each bucket I believe. Look in where the idiot lites are, should be one each way.

Thanks for the tip.  I spotted two screws in the parts list drawing that hold up a cover under the panel.  I had to remove the headlight to get at them.

Then I saw the mounting screw.

And after fumbling with the reset knob, I realized it is screwed on.  Unfortunately it does not screw back in as much because it spins the trip counter.  I hope it won't fall off.

You might consider the ultimate solution to your old-technology mechanical speedo problems: A Speedhut GPS speedo.  (This is a somewhat un-Guzzi remedy, because it actually costs money.)  No cable drive, cable sheath, cable or funky reset knob.  (All this paraphernalia is surprisingly heavy as well as cumbersome).   Extremely simple installation, precisely accurate readout, unaffected by tire changes/brands, completely reliable.  The gauge itself is very lightweight. Waterproofing around bezel available on request.  A very worthwhile upgrade, IMO, unless you are an authenticity freak.  Definitively eliminates speedo problems and inaccuracies.

Interesting stuff, thanks.
It would also solve my problem of Km/Mph, but like you said, un-Guzzi and un-authentic.
