Clutch Hand Lever
« on: August 14, 2019, 10:38:46 PM »
Friend of mine has a V7-Special (European version of the 4-speed Ambassador).  Parked in a warehouse and someone bumped it with a forklift snapping the clutch hand lever in half.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket substitute or other Guzzi model that would work satisfactorily while we search out an original?

Does anyone have an old bent or repaired one to keep the bike moving while we search out an original?

Does anyone have a nice old original?

Are the V7 and V850 5 speed clutch levers the same and if not what should I look for. I may not be able to reply until Monday.
I just modified a 72 Eldorado lever to fit larger barrel cables that were sent to me for what I was using as a daily rider (beater) up until I got the V85 TT a few weeks ago.
I think Honda levers may work or even the brake lever.

Pazo adjustable levers fit. Knock-offs of it are a quarter the price.
I bought a long set and a short set because it was so inexpensive.
Prefer the short levers. Now I have spares on hand.

Patrick, please post a pic so the lever can be matched. The diameter  size of the cable head will also help. Possibly a Benelli clutch lever (650 Tornado etc.) might work .

Pazo lists a lot of levers.

Any idea which specific item we should be looking at?

Expect to do that but we will still need an intact one for future.

Note that this is is the original V7 Special (Loopframe), not the modern V7 series. I doubt Pazo makes anything that will come close to fitting.

Patrick: I likely have what you need, just need to know if it has "finger ridges" or is it smooth? They're just slightly different where they fit into the perch.

Got a Benelli 650 brake lever. If yours is smooth as Charlie mentioned (no finger grooves) it will bolt up , albeit upside down, but it will get you going without  disturbing the perch, snuff tin switch etc. Pick up in SF. Maybe that will help?

The last time I was out at Mark's (MG Classics) he had a box full of levers. Probably has what you need, Patrick.

Yes, as Charlie mentions, this is an old, original  LoopFrame V7-Special sold in Rome in the early 1970's.

Here are pics of the snapped piece with dimensions.  We'll get this welded but it will likely look crude until we replace with an intact original.

Checked my stash - all of them I have are bent, with road rash on the ball end.

Call Mark Etheridge!  Why would you weld a lever if he has boxes full?

They can be straightened, Charlie, with no decrease in strength. Apply pressure while heating the area of the bend with a propane torch - when it starts to move you've got enough heat. Don't slip and brush your hand against the hot metal or you'll have a nasty looking scar.
