How many miles are on the bike?
23000 miles

Without a doubt , Lack of proper maintenance.

When was the last time the heads were properly re torqued and valves reset, and the proper mixture checked to see it is not too lean. Also the ignition timing set at full advance they way it should be.

Mike

And I did the valves and points last fall before took the bike to the Kentucky rally.  We set the timing the day before it blew, Chuck adjusted the carbs the best we could do with just sound.

At the Virginia rally, I was fortunate enough to be called second for a door prize. Snatched this tool off the bench. The lady sitting next to me asked what it was. I said, "I don't know, but it looks like I need it."
I didn't realize how soon I would need it, though.
Here, Austin is schooling me on how it works.

He had decided to put new valves in it because the exhaust was pretty beat up. I thought I'd walk to the house, get my phone and do a quick photo essay.
He already had the valves lapped in and was just finished assembling it when I came back.
Kids, anyway.. they're so impatient..
I had to remind him that Luigi was using an antique machine when he milled this head. "Yes, I know you can do a better job with that carbide inserted slab mill you are using on the nozzles, but they hadn't been invented in 1981.. "

Going back together as we speak.

Yes, it's a used cylinder and piston from Mark at MG Classics. <snapping suspenders>

I suppose this should incentivise me to pull my head out of my arse and finish off my Cali. Problem is daytime temps are still maxing out below 15*C and below that my hands simply don't work. I'm like a sort of Tyranosaurus Rex with these weedy little hooks on the end of my arms!

Top end is back together but. Now I just have to put all the extraneous crap back on, replace all the hoses and get it started. That'll be fun.
