« on: September 07, 2019, 07:15:52 AM »
….on her BICYCLE in honor of her birthday (Was in August).  I don't see how these bicyclists can do 100 mile days.  Man, that's gotta be tough!!

A few of my neighbors, who are well over 50 years old, regularly ride 75-100 miles. The guy next door is 75, and leads a group on rides throughout Bucks County.  Really keeps these folks in shape.

Hope your wife has a safe ride!

Fay and I used to do that when we were in our 20s and riding with the Southern Bicycle League in Atlanta.

We'd do a century ride 2 Saturdays a month with the club, generally out in the countryside (as it was) around Atlanta.

The fast guys would average over 20 MPH and would be done in 4 - 5 hours.    We averaged maybe 15 MPH and took 6 or 7 hours including rest stops.

The attitude of cars toward riders back then and there was pretty good and we seldom had any trouble on the road.

I grew up here where I live now, and my neighbors and other folks in the county are very good to live with and around in MOST ways; they're friendly, helpful, will do anything for you if you're in trouble, but there's some gene passed along that makes them absolute a$$holes on the road regarding bicyclists, don't know why.   I still have my old touring bike and a newer Serotta steel-framed road bike, but I wouldn't dare ride them around here ....

Hi Bob,                                                                                                                        9-7-19

Kudos to your wife!!

We live in the mountains and biking can be a real challenge so Barb bought an E-bike.  She does 18-25 miles at a clip and when necessary employs the "Peddle Assist" function.  She loves it!

Be well,
DougG

I've done my share, and Dorcia and I have done them on a tandem, but neither of us has ridden post cancer operations. <shrug>
Hmmm, anyone want to buy a tandem and/or recumbent?

So far whenever I ride a bicycle I hate/despise it, but I am trying to accept it more and more.  Its a work in progress but I cant ride like she does and doubt I ever will.   Its pretty hilly where I live and it will put you in shape awfully quick!

Oh I can so relate!
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

I did two centuries back to back a few years back. The main issue was not what one might think, such as heart, lungs or leg muscles, no, much more basic, my arse about put me down on the second day about 50 miles in! She’s one tough lady!!!

Earlier this summer a guy in our church crossed western KS from N to S in one day as part of a fundraiser. Did something like 226 miles. Believe me on a bike the northern half is quite hilly.
