Conti RA3 run in period
« on: September 09, 2019, 03:20:16 PM »
So i got a pair of RA3s fitted today and the fitter said to ride very carefully for the first 100 miles. Then I read that this specific tyre has a new system called Traction Skin Technology that obviates the need for a run-in:

"Continental produce their motorcycle tyres with no release agent from their manufacturing process. They call this 'Traction Skin', and it means riders do not have to go through a running-in period in order to scrub off the slippery release agent from the surface of a new tyre, which makes them very safe from the start."

(Source: https://www.motorcyclenews.com/new-gear/2017/march/new-tyre-launch-2017-continental-roadattack-3/)

Has anyone else experience of these tyres - and if so, did they ignore the run-in instructions?

wasting no time on a tangent...what did you put these on?

shopping Conti's currently myself...

Watched an info piece on the RA3 that said "little to no" break - in time. 100 miles ain't much.

What about the bead lube that gets slathered on the tire?

Trust me on this. I put a set on the MZ Skorpion out in SoCal. Decided to run Les Flores canyon, a technical road that goes right up the side of mountain range. Many switchbacks, etc. Thought this would give me a chance to slowly break them in. By the time I'd gone 10 minutes, I was going faster on that road than I'd ever gone. I'm a fan.. need I say?

I rocked mine from minute one on my V7 when I switched to them.  Still here-for what's it worth.

Im with king of fleece on this one. I was conservative for about twenty miles and than realized i had really tremendous grip. I think no harm done though if you break them in for a hundred miles.

The shop that mounted mine was right next to a high-speed expressway and the route home included many entrance/exit ramps and the urban traffic wasn't about to slow down a damn bit to allow a poor rider to break in new tires, had to concentrate on not getting run over...the Contis were superb right off the bat...

Haven't tried the Road Attacks but the last couple of sets of tyres I've had on the Griso have been Sport Attacks and while I wasn't overly gentle I wasn't going to push it. Why risk it?

Biggest issue with the Sport Attacks is they evaporate!

I've only done about 350 very boring Km on this one and it's already vanishing. If I get 4K out of it I'll be astonished. I'll tell you though they stick like shit to a blanket! I reckon I should try the Road Attacks next time. I switched to Conti's at Chuck's recommendation, as with most of his suggestions it was spot on.

I've been using Conti TKC's on the Stelvio too. Another great tyre but they too wear quickly.
