Information on brake recall
« on: September 07, 2019, 07:30:14 AM »
Came across this this morning. Not sure if it is an official Moto Guzzi document or something provided by a dealer. It looks focussed on the MGX or California 1400's and is a bit wonky, but does give a process to check your master cylinder.
BLUF: There needs to be a .3mm gap between lever and plunger with no engaging of the caliper pistons on the rotor or 3mm shim.

I still plan to pull the lever off and see if the plunger is adjustable but will likely try this test out later today.

Keep us posted please. I went on a ride today with friends. A pretty aggressive ride with lots of Twisties. No problems. 2016 Audace.

Not exactly.

The correct procedure, as I witnessed it while Jim Hamlin performed the recall on my Eldo was as follows.

1. Remove right front brake caliper.
2. Insert a 3mm wedge between the brake pads and pump the brake until it is trapped there.
3. Insert a 0.3mm feeler gauge between the lever and the piston on the master cylinder. Keep it there.
4. With he feeler gauge still in the master, try to expand the brake pads.

If they expand, you're good. If not, replace the master cylinder.

Even if you pass, a dealer MUST still perform the recall. This is a NHTSA recall. If you do it, it is for your own peace of mind.

Note: Likely a few pages back now, but this was posted back in mid August under the NHTSA title.

Is there a way to adjust the plunger in the master cylinder or the mating surface distance of the lever? Does the MC plunger ride within a threaded sleeve?

I don't know Mark. Other than remove the cover to check the fluid, and pulling the caliper off for the test, nothing else was disassembled. Speculation is that the return hole was drilled in the wrong place on some master cylinders, but I do not know that for sure.

Thanks, appreciate the info.  That does change things.... It is not as simple as 'free play' or a safe gap on the MC, it is about relief of pressure in the system, and your post explains why the caliper needs to come off the bike.

Thank you, your speculation would make sense.
