Oil Loss Mystery - Solved
« on: September 28, 2019, 01:20:45 PM »
I have a puzzle for you guys. I ran the 74 Eldo up to Salina, KS to support my buddy at a car show. It was about 190 miles. When I got here, I shut it down, and immediately smelled hot oil. Looked around, and found my right side exhaust and bag splattered with oil. Somewhere during the final 90 miles (which were hard miles, running 75-80 to keep up with traffic, and high winds) I blew out a little more than half of my oil. Looking at where it's pooled on top of the case, it looks like it came from somewhere around the air filters, so my first though was the breather. However, I have checked every hose and seal I can think of, and found no problems. I'm baffled. Any ideas?

I've never owned a loop frame, but every guzzi I've owned has at some point in time, puked oil out the valve covers.

Hopefully the better Valpolini gaskets will put an end to that.

If you just did a high speed run up the highway, a leaking valve cover could be blowing oil back onto the first thing it hits, with me it's usually my boots, lol, on your bike it could be your air filter?

     Good luck with it.

As Dusty said, I talked to Ace to see if he had any ideas. Apparently, it's not at all uncommon for these old loops to puke oil out of the breather box, when they get run really hard for a while, like that. Just too much pressure. Apparently, the issue can be permanently fixed by removing the flapper valve from inside the breather, which I may do at a later date. So no real problem, which is a big relief. Just fill it back up before I head home, tomorrow, and maybe take a different route that doesn't have 90+ miles of 75 mph interstate on it, haha.
