Stelvio lights out (head and aux)
« on: October 02, 2019, 08:55:27 PM »
Just out for a ride and all off a sudden no more headlights or aux lights. Can't really dig into it tonight, but here's what I know so far:

-i was told that the aux lights had been fused (not verified though)
-the aux lights will not come on, and the dash indicator will not light up when I move the switch to the on position
-headlights are not on, but the two dim bulbs in the housing are lit
-highbeams not operational either, dash indicator illuminates when pulling trigger for passing, but does not illuminate when I toggle the switch forward

Fuse, or something else?

Just sold my Stelvio a month ago. Never had this issue myself but remember there were others who did. Sorry but I am a bit fuzzy on the details but i seem to remember that it was a relay problem. I am sure one of the members will be along that either had the issue or know what the cause is.

Try checking the 30 amp fuse under the seat. I think I remember someone had the same issue. If I'm recollecting correctly it also stops your battery from charging. I've also had both headlight sockets go bad at the same time.Good luck.

I've fixed a couple where fuses were ok but relays went bad. Get the whole set & clean the pin connectors w/a cleaner.
It takes a bit of time but fixes it IF it's not the big fuses. On later models it's easier to take R/H side panel off.

Chances are, fused or not, the fog lamps have shorted out blowing the fuse. That fuse controls not only the lights but also the alternator so likely the bike isn't charging. Can't remember offhand which fuse it is. One of the electrical whizzes with a photographic memory will be along in a minute to tell you.

As Pete said - or Steve...

If fuse not the issue it will be a relay, the one closest to rear will be light relay. Went bad on mine and had same problem. You won’t be charging either as Pete said.

The +12V goes from the 30A main fuse to one side of the light logic relay and aux light relay. The relays will switch this to the lamps themselves.

I highly suspect your 30A main fuse is blown. The bike will still run, but not charge. Sooner or later the battery will die and it won't run.
I would also suspect the Aux lamps are not fused, or fused improperly.

Thanks guys, I'll start checking the fuses first after work today. I'm supposed to be leaving for the TX rally in the morning, so hopefully it's just the most simple thing. My aux lights were on when it all went out, so there's a good chance of a short there I guess.

Unplug each light 1st so the fuse doesn't blow w/you turn on aux spots IF there is a short.

Best to replace the 30A fuse and check each light wiring for a fuse in the stock harness. Follow each Aux lamp wires back to the connector up under the faring. There should be a fuse before the factory harness. I would leave them off if you are not sure.

If in fact your aux lights are the trouble, you should be able to simply keep them turned off until it is corrected. When it happened to me, I was at Crater Lake, many miles from home. Once home, I found the trouble and corrected it. Unlike others, I wrapped the tail coming off the bulb itself, (the source of the trouble), with 3M fiberglass insulating tape. I wrapped two layers and have checked many times since then, 2012, and all has been well. Although I prepped a couple extra bulbs and put them under the seat, I have never needed them. Go figure. Very inexpensive, and not much time to deal with.

Seems to have been the 30A fuse. It was blown and the lights fired right back up after replacing. My aux lights have not been fused (as I was told), so I won't use them again until they are. I did wrap lots of tape around the wires in the lights though. I don't see any obvious signs of rubbing.
