EV 11 crossover exhaust piece
« on: October 12, 2019, 04:27:26 PM »
I'm adding a sidecar to my 98 V11. Using the front engine bolt for the side car front mount attachment. That makes the through engine bolt just long enough to rub against the exhaust pipe. Especially when I add the crossover which pulls the exhaust pipe tighter in to the bike in turn causing more rubbing. I'm wondering about simply doing away with the crossover to create more room for the exhaust pipe. And then will that make the bike run worse or better or what not at all? 😎
Or is the exhaust header thick enough to withstand being pushed against the through engine bolt?

I think the header is double wall but you don't want it vibrating against that nut. It will be annoyingly noisy. Eliminate the washer under the nut and substitute blue Loctite for retention. Maybe even chamfer the outboard nut flat to gain a bit more clearance. Just went through this when I pulled the engine on my V11EV.

I think you can re-position the exhaust pipe enough to clear the bolt. You might need to loosen and re-tighten both sides. There's more play in there than you might think.

H Pipe was setting the outward  limits on mine. It wasn't the stock tumor but an aftermarket ghat made oil changes easier.

I split my h pipe and found a pipe that slipped in, held by band clamps so it can be widened or narrowed.  In any case the silver antisneez is your friend here

Did you loosen the pipes where they attach to the heads? If not, try that. I think you can get 1/8 to 1/4" of movement in by doing that. (I also have a sidecar rig with a subframe)

All was loose. Flanges pretty much close fit in head counterbore. No axial movement there. Had I not been out of time I would have split the H Pipe as John did.

the original H pipe does give it more torque. it will rev free"r in the upper range but you will miss that torque especially with the side car.

I run a crossover in the front, Mistral pipes from MG cycle and also retain the factory crossover under the trans.  The Dyno guy said that was the best for torque when I first set it up last century.
