Well the thing of it is, as they say up here, you either train the dog or it trains you. Try to keep the dog from jumping, scratching, or creating problems from day one. The other thing to do is to keep their claws trimmed short. The restraint/harness is also a way to go, google them online. I've trained dogs for years and the deal is, you either train them or they give you a hard time. your choice.
