Iowa City Deer Culling
« on: November 22, 2019, 12:49:43 PM »
Might be safer around Iowa City to ride a motorcycle.  Seems the City Officials are looking at reducing the numbers to protect the over-eating of plants/flora by deer.  Jerky?

80 deer per square mile is starvation and disease territory for the deer, not to mention the damage they do to anything green.

In our local little city, archers kill hundreds of deer annually in the city limits on a city permit to try to keep the population under control.   I assume that the ones in the article are being taken by bowhunters, although it says "sharpshooters", which could include archery too I suppose.

I'd rather have deer starve than people.  The harvested deer will feed people.   :thumb:

The Axis deer on this island got eradicated.  Invasive species.  The guys on Maui and Molokai like to make teriyaki jerky with chili flakes.  :thumb:

Is it okay to wipe out envisions species?

Wolves and bison have been gone a long time from my area of the world. My life has been no different. So watching video on Animal Planet or History channel of Wolves and Bison is all the same to me.

Well, let's not kill 'em all, but kill them and eat them until there are about the same number that there were 200 years ago.   Then we wouldn't be seeing them on the road all the time and hundreds of people a year getting killed by them.

They were rare when I were a lad.   A hunter would be lucky to see one in a season, and the hunt clubs were very particular about killing only bucks.   Now, you can take 16 per year here on one license and they're still multiplying like Replicators or Motie Watchmakers ....

Yeah , and if we had fewer people things would be a lot better also .

Fellas , we go down this road about twice a year , I get PM's from both sides of the issue . I will not go into why the issue is loaded on the open forum, if you care to know why this "we gotta kill the deer" thing is problematic you will need to contact me .

In B.C , a community called Grand Forks has so many deer, that I personally know a few Belgian tourist that came to this community just to see the deer all about the motel where they stayed.   Peter

Perfect example of the term I just mentioned. I was actually thinking of this as I typed it.

Wolves vs Elk:   Wildlife Populations Are At Risk

Idaho is in danger of losing its rich diversity and ample numbers of deer, elk, moose, and wild sheep.

Idaho Lolo Region Study
1995 Wolves reintroduced
16,000 Elk
2016
1,000 Elk

https://www.foundationforwildlifemanagement.org/wolf-facts     I don't have a , um, dog in this race    I do know that when humans mess with the natural order of the food chain, it often does not go as intended. I believe I'd prefer elk or venison to wolf meat. My best advice is to slow TF down when in deer or elk land, or free range. It is not your private racetrack.

Many metro areas conduct "culling" on the QT.  Neighbors find out and next thing you know "Save Bambi" takes over and stop the hunts.

Well said.  There is a lot more food source for deer and other wildlife now than 200 years ago, and less habitat.  Species on a collision course for sure.

It seems to me, all human solutions are problematic, as well as being extremely localized.  Arguments start when the one-size-fits-all solution start being proposed across the board.

Idaho boasts well over 100.000 elk according to its official figures.

I do agree that man is very good at messing things up and that we need to slow down in deer and elk country.  And this thread is going to get banned.  :)

Well, we do have something in common...That being said I do allow my neighbor to hunt deer on my property...And I have no problem with legal hunters.. But..when I see a hunter posing with the kill brought down by a firearm I am not impressed...A spear or knife would impress me..

Critters are moving back into my area of CT. Saw trailcams last fall of a black bear sow and her two cubs in the woods behind my house. Been hunting back there for thirty years, never seen a bear before. We ate the "Bozrah moose" at a gun club game dinner a few years ago. A cow moose that got hit by a car on Rte. 2. I have a pic of a cougar taken in Sterling (the four legged kind). Deer population is pretty stable around here. Enough hunters, I guess. Wild turkeys are all over the place.

A neighbor hit a deer awhile back oh his large HD with just 1500K on the clock. The strange part was he was on the entrance ramp on !-40/!85 in Burlington NC where it is crowded with strip malls, gas stations, fast food joints and almost no trees. He was accelerating about 3/4 of the way down the ramp going about 65 MPH  looking over his left shoulder in rush hour traffic getting ready to merge. The deer came of out nowhere from the right and was headed right into the the 6 lane interstate. It hit him right on the front end.  Omar was just was lucky with just a T shirt on. Heavy road rash on his arms and 1/2 helmet save his life. The bike is ridable and will get repaired this winter. No more T shirts for him he says now.

I saw in the Minnie paper a few years ago where the citys used guys dressed in camo in tree stands to cull the deer.  they used a  shotgun with a 6' -8' long barrel that worked as a silencer, and fired a beanbag of shot.  The bag ran out of steam after only about 30 ft. IIRC so as not to go thru some house. But would knock down the deer,  with no issue of it  running away.  Soccer mom on a jogging trail would never know she was just feet from the guy, and a dead deer. .   Folks did not want to see bambi running thru the neighbor hood bleeding with an arrow in its ass, so archers are out.  Those guns worked well.  My son lives in Savage so there are lots of trees in the cities.   :coffee:
