I’ve been informed by a Christmas guest that there is a coming catastrophe for my computer because Windows 7 won’t be supported anymore or some such madness-Apparently I can upgrade to Windows 10 but my computer is 10 years old so I guess it’s a new one for me. Is it really that bad?

There are some 10 year old computers that will run Win 10 OK, I'm typing this on one of them.  BUT a new computer would run a little faster and be better in the long run.  Just my 2 cents.

Why is it a catastrophe? I have a Windows 7 laptop that I look forward Micro$oft not interfering with anymore. No more infuriating & unexpected "please wait while Windows installs updates" messages when you just want it to shutdown so you can stick it back in your pannier.

I upgraded an old desktop and old laptop to Win 10. It works.
All that is going to happen with the 'no support' thing is you may want to install one of the free virus checking programs.
It isn't like they are going to make it stop working.

My 2 cents; the cost of computers  keeps coming down relative to how capable they are. How fast they are & how much storage they have.

Unless you run photo / video editing programs or Autocad which can require faster systems. 10 years is a good time to replace your computer. You got your moneys worth out of it. You can upgade it's OS easily but for not much more money you can get a basic new computer.

I'm looking at the same situation with my laptop & thinking after 4 years I should get a newer version, it's a write off to the business & I can seperate the Autocad laptop that goes to site with me & the computer that does the finances.

Well, Win10 does not suck, it simply works. And it shows "you can proceed work while Win10 is updated".

In some time you won't get browser and other software updates anymore. Because when MS isn't supporting the OS, why should we make software that runs on it.
If win 10 runs fine depends on the hardware, Does it have 4gb memory or better 8gb? enough harddisk space(better SSD). Processor?  If it is slow now, it will be a bit slower with 10.
I have a netbook from 2009 with atom processor, that started with win XP. then 7 and now 10, with 7 it was slow, with 10 just a bit slower. But I replaced it with a used HP elitebook 820 g3 for little money, that runs like a new one.

I'm still using a laptop running Vista to support some older software, it works fine and browser mail etc: all work

Win10 has a lot of junk attached to it but there are a lot of free scripts out there that can declutter it.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about keeping 7 if you're happy with it, unless you store sensitive/financial info on it or plan to run loads of new software packages in the future. I'd move any sensitive/financial stuff off the hard drive, but that would be about it, perhaps some anti virus software as Wayne suggests too. Up until relatively recently my wife was running a desktop with XP, never a problem despite all the doomsayers. The only reason it was abandond was due to a hard drive crash, otherwise she'd still be using it.
