8V vs. 4V 1200 Engine smoothness intervals
« on: January 03, 2020, 03:37:02 PM »
Curious when 8V (Griso, Norge, Stelvio) owners saw any noticeable improvements in smoothness from their engines.

I've clocked up 3K miles so far on my 2015 Griso, and it feels ilke it's starting to loosen up a bit compared to when new.  Getting 40 mpg with a Beetle Map on a regular basis, so I'm quite happy with that, took it today for a nice 100 mile run thru the hills and decided to play most of the way between 5k to 8k rpm = seems to love this range quite a bit.

I recall that on my 4V 2008 Norge which now has 40K miles, it showed improvement in smoothness around 5K, 10K, 15K and around 20K miles seemed to reach optimal smoothness, feels like I've got a ways to go on the Griso yet.

Wondering if the 8V smooths out at similar intervals to the 4V engines or perhaps faster?

Thanks!

What kind of engine oil are you using?

:)  The right kind of course Sir Esquire Prescott!  Nothing but the smoothest, slipperiest, proper viscosity prescribed stuff!   :thumb: :thumb:

My 8V Stelvio engine roughness between 3600 and 3900 rpm smoothed out when at 4300 miles.

I noticed a noticable difference on both my V7 and Norge around 5K or so.  V7 never liked 4th below 4K and now at 12K it's fine almost down to 3.5K.  Got better from 5K to 12K.   Similar on Norge.  Smoother at lower rpm in higher gears that as new.

By the time my first and second Norge 8Vs went away, they were noticeably smoother by 10,000 miles. My latest Norge 8V has only about 2,000 miles on its, but it already smooth at higher RPMs.

I doubt these engines will ever be really smooth, but I prefer them a bit rough. I want to feel the "character" of the engine. That is a big reason I sold my 2018 RT and went back to a 2016 Norge. It was too smooth...

Around 90,000 my Norge went through a transition period. It became smoother overnight.
Coincided with a Beetle map and a Roper TB job.
Seriously though, it’s more velvety than ever @ 180,000

Thanks guys!  Helpful feedback...I may just have to put the Griso on a long trip to Cedar Vale to rack up the miles quicker!  Engine is a joy, love both the 4V and 8V variants, sounds like the 8V version might smooth out faster than the 4V...fun!

Off to ride again today...picture perfect weather again!

Saw a big change on my 8V Norge in the 8-10K range.  4V Griso feels about the same at 12K as it did when I got it at 4K.

Too Funny!  Prescott is a unicorn...a highly competent lawyer with a sense of humor!  Very rare indeed!  Even funnier sitting around the campfire or when extolling the virtues of a clattering clutch from a Ducati at a Guzzi rally!  Come to think of it, he was using a very special Olive oil when cooking pasta last year at the Texas rally..will have to check the viscosity of it and whether it was first press or not and more importantly whether it was officially prescribed in the Norge maintenance handbook!

Huzo...we really need to get you to Cedar Vale one year...the entire state of Kansas will tilt sideways for a weekend, just fly on in to Houston, we'll lend you a smooth velvety 4V Norge for your riding pleasure.

I have had two new 1100s, I never noticed these multiple smoothies at various multi-pulls of thousands of miles.    Maybe I’m just insensitive?
