There are really only about 4 commercial beers that are any good , Grolsch , Pilsner Urquell , a beer brewed in Africa known as Zambezi , and real Mexican Modello .

I've had several pints right at the source. It's truly worth the experience. I've had it on tap in the US and Australia, and it definitely gets better the closer you get to Dublin.

Same thing applies to Pabst, and I suspect many beers. They just don't travel well.

... and I pay about as much attention to that sort of scolding as I do the noises of the cockchafer beetle; there's just as much meaning and intelligence involved, and the beetle makes it for a better reason!

Lannis

No worries here Lannis.  My favorite response to those who are miffed by something they find on the internet is the timeless wisdom of "Well you know, offense is always in the receiver, not the transmitter.  Right?"

Now, they are really offended.  Seems like cosmic justice at work to me.

that 'guinness' stuff served in the US has almost no resemblance to the proper stuff!

It's marginally better in Oz

Most of my Irish friends refuse even to drink the stuff in the UK, where it's miles better than in the USA or AUS

And as an Irish citizen who has conducted a great deal of research into the black stuff I can obviously declare myself an authority on the matter

A good local ale in an English pub beats everything IMHO, getting slightly harder to find....

I'm more partial to a Kilkenny over a Guinness or a coopers pale ale. my grandfather always suggested it depended on the water used in the base product however Coppers which is probably one of the better locally Mavailable beers and West End which is a waste of perfectly good water both come from the same state/water supply. A free crap beer is still a crap beer.

The first time I went to Ireland and ordered a Guinness, the barman pulled half a glass then walked off to serve some other customers. Hmm, clearly anti-English. But he did the same with their drinks, and they were Irish. He came back to mine, and topped it up. I was ready for it, but no, he walked away again. Finally he came back, topped up again, and I was ready to go. It was superb. Nothing like the drink they brewed in England under the Guinness name.

Course, the REAL reason the Brits drank their beer room temp was because Lucas made refrigerators as well.

There is a little "Euro Pub" in Poulsbo Washington called Tizleys that regularly had a variety of cask ale. Gravity fed, on an elevated rack.... VERY nice, as is their inhouse special Reuben sandwich with house made corned beef, schnitzel, and kraut... They also have St Bernardus Abt 12 which is a great beer........
