Who is a good mechanic to send a R100/7 5-speed transmission in the Mid West to Mid South USA?

Might also google Matthew Parkhouse BMW. He and Tom Cutter are both experienced at tranny repairs and rebuilds, and both know how to correctly machine the groove in the output shaft so the circlip BMW decided to quit installing on some series of the airheads can be installed. Fifth gear is helical, and under heavy throttle, tends to put a side load on the output shaft bearing (causing premature bearing failure.) The circlip keeps this from happening.

I'd talk with both of them.

BTW is their physical location critical? I thought you'd be mailing your tranny to them

Location is not absolutely important, but the option to drop it off and pick it up would be nice from Missouri. It would make a good excuse for a road trip especially if I strapped it to the Guzzi. (when I get it get back on the road)

That generation of beemer 5 speed is pretty tough , what is wrong with it ?

I'm pretty familiar with those transmissions. Yes, Matt in the Denver area is a good possibility, but there may be someone locally to help you out. Like Dusty, I'm curious what the problem is. How many miles on it? Also, your transmission should have the circlip -it wasn't until the mid 80s they started leaving them out. Asking on the airhead list might find someone local to you.

I'd forgotten that the circlip issue probably began after this bike was built.

A shame. For what? A $1.35 clip and a few additional minutes having the groove machined into the output shaft? My guy Jamie in the area doesn't do the circlip mod, but last time, (@156,000 miles) had him replace all bearings and shifter wear items. Figured that repair would outlast me!

It used to shift super smooth and fast, but I rode it home once with a broken clutch cable, shifting without clutch, and it has been very clunky shifting since. Syntehtic oil seemed to make it worse, but stiil same after putting dinosaur oil back in. Clutch cable adjustment makes no difference.
Added later. Miles appear to be 25,000

I think you would almost have to describe the 'trip home' before anyone could make a judgement. I've ridden a few long miles with no clutch cable, but if you were really abusing the tranny to make the bike move, you may have done some real damage.

Rose Farm shut down last year. He got an offer on his building and his said it was time to retire. Jim is still around, but not accepting work AFAIK

I only had to ride the R100 sidecar rig about a mile through residential streets with intersection every block. I rolled through all the stop signs, but had to make a couple of complete stops in neutral. It wasn't too bad except twice I had to drop it into gear at an idle while pushing along at walking pace.

I know a guy who is a master at these transmissions. I mean he can make it shift better, he can increase the 5th gear ratio, it'll be better than new when he's done. I have forwarded him your post, I'm sure he'll contact you if he can take the job.
