Joe Caruso gears for Norge
« on: February 18, 2020, 05:40:13 AM »
Has anyone fitted a set of Joe Caruso’s timing gears into a Norge ?
It’s either that, or take out the lump of casting preventing the fitment of this.

Currently this

I want this

Or better still

the trick to installing those is to take the tiny nut off and assemble in place. otherwise its damn near impossible.

Ok mate thanks..
I’d heard that from a budding mechanic that lives near me.
Problem is, that there’s a bloody great lump of casting in the way they I’ve gotta’ remove.
BTW
Where are all the beaut videos of you racing..
I loved those..!

Feeling spendy Peter?

I just have been emailing Joe over the past few days, on unrelated issues

Got his gears on the LM 1000 engine and the 1100 sport, there great but not cheap.

That said once done, no more worrries about stretchy cam chains, tensioners etc:

What makes the Norge engine a special case?

John

I thought there was a rider here that modified  the stock bracket to fit the band on your new one. That way no need to cut out the lump. This is what I would do.

Try as I might I can't see what lump of metal you are referring to.
The old tensioner support bracket has to go, on my VII Sport I just cut it off with a hacksaw to the right of the RH bolt, engraved the date on the piece left and put it back otherwise the bolts would have been the wrong length.
If you need to remove the crank shaft nut a 32mm 3/4" drive socket slips over the long nose of the shaft, grind a couple of flats on the circumference and remove with a 12" shifting spanner.
The original brass tensioner in the California II with over 100,000 miles was in perfect shape so I left it.

FYI,    To fit timing gears , you will have some metal removal/ clearance work at the ignition pickup, like this griso 2v.

What’s the bottom line figure $$$ wise on the gear set John ?
The drama with the Norge is the piece of casting that prevents the base for the new mount sitting correctly. There needs to be a modification to the tensioner base, or removal of the lump of casting.
Thank you all for the replies, invaluable input.... :thumb:

thats the exact problem I've got with putting caruso gears in my 1100 lump

one thing worth noting, the caruso steel gears weigh fractionally more than the whole sproket and chain and tensioner IIRC

Is the amount requiring removal significant ?
Mine is a 2VPC ‘07 Norge, does that apply to me ?
