V7 loop v V7Sport sump capacity.
« on: March 28, 2020, 12:06:10 PM »
Today I changed the engine oils in my V7 700 loopframe and the V7Sport. Does anyone know why the capacities for what are basically the same engine are quoted as being different in the factory workshop manuals. Both have a sump of what looks to be the same size with no filter.

The 700 and 750cc loops are quoted as taking 3 litres of engine oil and, sure enough, this comes to the correct point on the dipstick.

The V7Sport is said to need 3.5 litres of oil and once again that registers correctly on the dipstick.

I've noticed the difference before but, now that I'm stuck resident on the family estate, I'm trying to work out why.

No idea.  I have both an Ambo and Sport.  Have had 2 other Eldos.  Vintage Guzzis tend to "self-level" their oil.

I alway put in 3 quarts, no more, no less.  They've all seemed to be very happy there.

^^ This. Many dipsticks are marked incorrectly or are the incorrect length, so I drain completely, add three qts. and then make my own mark.

Over the past seven years I have done at least 2 dozen oil changes on Ambo’s and the V7 Sport. Most of the oil changes were due to new floats from MGCycle that promptly sank and proceeded to flood the cylinders with gas which meant my oil was filled with gas. Also, new Petcocks were always a problem. New petcocks love to not hold back gas and then gas leaks into the carbs and then down into the cylinders. Anyways, every time 3 quarts is the perfect amount according to the MGCycle dipstick. Oddly enough, the stock dipstick is usually off.

Thanks for the replies. It seems I'm right and there is no clear reason for the differences as far as anyone knows. I had just wondered if the larger amount was a "factory update" in the light of experience. Seems not.

It's interesting you all use 3 quarts (US I assume) as that's less than 3 litres. Like others here I drain and measure the oil fill each time and each time the dipsticks measure correctly. Either the 3 or 3.5 litres I've put in, so it looks like they are acurate enough.

My V7Sport doesn't blow any excess oil out. Out of interest, I've measured what was in the drainer can. There's just under 3.5 litres. My guess would be putting the larger amount in the old V7 700 would be OK too. However, I think I'll just continue to do as I've always done.
