Bar end mirrors V7 Racer
« on: March 29, 2020, 10:03:40 AM »
Hey all,

Recently purchased a 2012 V7 Racer and I'm looking to switch out the mirrors for bar end ones. I bought some mirrors online but the screw is too large for my handle bar. The mirrors I purchased fit 7/8'' so I'm wondering if I can buy an adapter (if so which one) or if I need to buy new mirrors to fit.

I'm new to the motorcycle world so I apologize my knowledge is not quite there yet.

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Which bar end mirrors did you buy?

Do you have the original bars on your Racer?
When you take off the bar end weights, does that bolt go into threads that are inside your handlebars?

There are 2 main ways to mount bar end mirrors.
1. An expandable thing-ie that goes inside your bars and expands as you tighten the bolt.  (but doesn't work for bars that have a fixed nut (threads) inside of them)
2. Threads are inside your handlebars and you thread the bar end mirror bolt into that (gotta make sure you have the right diameter bolt and that it fits your bar end nicely)

There is a third, goofier type that clamps on the outside of the bars ... but for that type of gotta push your throttle tube inwards to make room ... with means move your levers ... which means deal with the mounting pins ... and you gotta get the left grip to go inwards to make room ... basically a real pain unless you are putting on new bars and grips at the same time.

Here is an example of the ones with the expander thing-ies: https://www.amazon.com/MICTUNING-Universal-Motorcycle-Mirrors-Kawasaki/dp/B07FCCJR87/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=bar+end+mirrors&qid=1585497317&s=automotive&sr=1-4

So these types would work if your bar had no nut/threads in them.  They might work if you do have a nut/threads in them (gotta get a bolt that goes in there and works right)

Here are the third goofy type:  https://www.amazon.com/MZS-Bar-Mirrors-Standard-hollow/dp/B07C7VTFB8/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=bar+end+mirrors&qid=1585497373&s=automotive&sr=1-3-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyRkZOODBPOEEzWjkzJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwOTkwNjYyMjIxMVZCUElDQjg0TCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDIwOTMxMkZRTlJGMkxUTFFDTCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

I wouldn't even attempt these unless you are swapping bars and grips at the same time.

Also, they are some fancy (expensive) ones that are a combo of bar end weight and mirror at the same time.  Here is an example of these: https://www.af1racing.com/store/scripts/prodview.asp?idProduct=61342

Also, I just quickly picked examples to show you, did not mean these are good examples (no experience with any of those products).

I bought thesse - https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/bike-master-folding-bar-end-mirrors

I do have the original handle bars on my Racer so when I take the bar end weights off, there are threads to screw into.

The screw on the mirrors that I recently purchased are too big. Would I be able to just purchase a different screw?

If I can find a pair that has the correct screw diameter then I will go with those.

Appreciate the help! Like I said, pretty inexperienced over here

At one time I went through a bar end mirror phase - the best I found were those from CRG, first the HS (hindsight) and then the LS (lane splitter). Very well made, with all parts replaceable. Excellent product. They also made a small plastic bar end adapter for such bikes as ours. I would get mine from Bevel Heaven. Corsa Italiana (since out of business) also made a pretty billet adapter to fit. See the photo. I could not adequately compensate for the far view of the reflection - made traffic look a lot further away, and ended up going back to mounting mirrors in the stock posts.
Surprisingly, I found the stock mirrors give a much betterview with low bars, than they do with standard bars - can see around arm & shoulder.

Other excellent ones to look out for are the glassless ones from Motogadget.

Hum, can you use your original bar end weight bolts with the mirrors?  If that is a bit sloppy, like the bar end mirror is a m6 and the bar end weight is a m4 , then maybe find a sleeve spacer that will work?

Like this:

Hopefully you have a decent hardware store nearby and can sort out bolts vs sleeves vs something.  If you have an Ace Hardware store you might even get someone to help you sort it out!  Just take your mirrors and different bolts in there and explain what you are trying to do.
