im weighing the option of having my 1000cc kit engine balanced in my 73 eldorado and was wondering if I should wait to find a stock size kit. just wondering how often Gilardonis are released. was thinking about rebuilding the engine back to stock size. if I stay with the 88mm venolia pistons and iron liners, should I change the carbs from the stock 29mm dellortos? judging by the work of the previous owner im going through EVERYTHING.

It could be a very long wait for 83 mm Gilardonis. Word is (from a Gilardoni employee no less) that 83 mm kits are done - no more will be made. Stein-Dinse or someone else might step in to fill the void eventually (S-D did have their own sets available briefly).

Are they 88 mm Venolia pistons or 89 mm? Most I've seen are 89.

Just my opinion: find a good set of stock chrome bore cylinders and pistons, have the cylinders replated.

Yes 89mm my mistake. I’m getting gaskets from cometic. Been chatting with them lately about correct gaskets. I guess I’ll stick with what I have for now. Should my carbs be upgraded?

There's is little to be gained from going with larger carbs, without other breathing modifications.

Throttle response could definitely be improved by simply going to the round bodied 30mm , but it easy to spend someone else's money :)
Use what you have and make further modifications afterwards . I have 89mm Wiseco pistons in my Le Mans 2 and can't say the vibration
merits getting anything balanced . No, it's not as totally smooth as it was with the stock pistons , but hardly cause for concern . YMMV . Peter

I have always advocated balancing when increasing the bore. Now, if the motor's together and you're happy with it - ok, but if it's apart, yes. Going from a 29 to a 30 VHB will get you nada. 30mm PH's are pretty easy to find tho.

I have a spare set of phf32's from my old Ducati that I had on my g5. Had reducers made and fit well on that bike. The g5 will probably go, so ill put the vhb's back on it. The eldorado engine is on my bench right now. If I can get the parts balanced in reasonable time ill do it but I don't want my parts sitting around because of the virus crap. Hense staying with what I have now since gilardonis will be a while. Ill probably get a set of Lafranconi slash cut mufflers for it, so a little better breathing than stock.
Anyone here put phf32's on their eldorado/ambassador? Ive seen 36's and 30's but haven't seen 32's for some reason, well maybe there is a good reason

No, they are strictly manufacturing as far as I know. Millennium Technologies repairs and replates though.

Even though they replate ( ? $ ) , what can they do to the fact the worn bores are definitely no longer the oem dimensions ? Peter

$209.95 per cylinder is current retail. They can't do anything if the bores are too worn, but if just the normal flaking chrome issue, it's not a problem.

Harpers can help too, and they will find you a good set of pistons if the ones you have are knackered. They will get you all the rings and gaskets too.

FWIW, I got replated exchange cylinders, new forged pistons & rings and gaskets through Mark Etheridge at MG Classics a few years ago. I recently got the engine back into the bike & running, so far everything seems to be good. Mark had set the ring gaps too.

When I worked in the aircraft shop we had cylinders chrome plated as a regular procedure in the overhaul process. We had to use the old pistons as there were no oversize pistons available as the market wasn't large enough for piston manufacturers to bear the expense of getting certification from the FAA. So we sent the cylinders off to an outfit in Oklahoma to chrome the bores and grind them to fit the old pistons. We would machine the ring lands to square again, get slightly oversize rings and grind them to fit the lands. The name of the company is Aircraft Cylinders of America. You might check with them, maybe they could do them if not maybe they would know who could.

I have a spare set of OEM 850 chrome cylinders, heads, pistons and rockers if anyone needs them. Cylinders will need replating and heads should be rebuilt.

I've heard of two failures of Langcourt replated cylinders. Never heard of any problems with Millennium or US Chrome.
