Gilardoni barrels, kicking myself.

Well, only a little bit. Finally decided to take care of the ambassador.




Barrels look like new with no flaking. pistons show minimal wear. I think the 32,000 miles on the odometer might be accurate. Upon inspection the inside of the engine looks like new.




Cylinder heads look allright.




Hind sight being 20/20 I might have left her alone. + side is I won't have that itching sensation in the back of my head that he engine will sieze when going down the road.

FYI The new pistons have a slightly higher dome.

If you want to easily clean the carbon deposits off the heads before you reinstall. Brush on some gel type AirCraft paint stripper. The carbon will turn to ozze in seconds then blast away with some carb cleaner.

If you don’t look and measure you don’t know! Now you can get that out of your head and free up some space😄

The risk is just too great not to do it, the chrome is hard and embeds in places like the cam bearings that can't be replaced besides the places like the crank bearings that can be replaced at an expense that would put a lot of machines in the parts pile. Instead of kicking yourself, congratulate yourself on a wise decision that will save a fine machine!

Fear of the chrome bore issue has kept me from riding it as much as I would have liked. What do I do with the original barrels and pistons? does anyone buy them for cores?

 Nickelsil the barrels or have iron bores inserted and keep for spares or sell them.  I bought some for spares awhile back.

I don't have quite that many - I sent Mark @ Moto Guzzi Classics six sets back when he was doing "kits". Some of the worst ones I just recycle.

I don't know why I hang on to the 84s, but the 88s are cast iron, I'm going to do some big bore kits for Eldos and Ts someday

With Gilardoni abandoning the Loop aftermarket, what is the new default approach when needing to eliminate the chrome? Is there a shop out there marketing itself on a bore and coat process for the Guzzi community? Is the cost in line with the Gilardoni replacements?

Came across a bike with 51K on the ODO, single owner, daily driver, supposedly. could be a score but this work needs to factored into the cost of the bike in my view.

Any feedback appreciated.

Millennium will replate both cylinders for ~ $460/pr. + shipping. New rings, circlips and gaskets will bring it up another $150 or so. You don't mention which Loop - NOS V700 pistons are available and Mark @ Moto Guzzis Classics has slightly oversize CP Pistons for both Ambo and Eldo.

Or, Cycle Garden will sell you big bore kits with Mahle(?) pistons and iron liners for $975 a pair.
