Any experience using off-the-shelf replacement bulbs?

A long time ago I installed an early LED tail light bulb but it isn't brighter than stock. Of course I lost the prior bulb. And I've found I have no brake lights.

I'll continue to experiment with what I have in the garage until someone can give me a better alternative.

Another great tail light / brake light bulb from eBay.
It strobes 4 flashes with brake application then stays solid bright. Real attention getter and visible at all angles.

The one on the left is LED per Charlie's recommendation.  Very worthwhile.

EBAY product flashes 4 times. Turns out 4 flashes is what California law allows as maximum allowable. Who woulda figured.....  Bulb is really nicely made with nickel plate base and billet aluminum upper section. Been running  them in all my bikes for 3 years now. Was a real challenge in the Ural as they ran positive to the outer socket and switched neutral to ground to turn on the lights. LED lights are polarity sensitive. They don't light with reverse polarity.

I find flashing taillights on motorcycles distracting.

They are supposed to be screaming "I'M STOPPING - DON'T HIT ME!"
Four flashes, then solid bright distinguishes your target area from the surrounding solid red lights in your traffic group.

The flashing does make you look, it did for me. But...I did first think what was that. Then I figured it out. The question would be if thinking about what it is would slow your reaction to it?

On a fairly open road, I think it would be a good thing. But in tight traffic, it might be a bad thing?

WTF reaction usually triggers an emergency response. Which is usually HIT THE BRAKES, and figure the hazard out as you decelerate. WTF response usually means the driver wasn't situationally aware in the first place.

But if a driver is functioning competently they have already identified all targets in their path and won't produce an "emergency response" just because a target flashes.

OK, I totally messed up  I thought Antietam (Charlie) had posted in this thread.  So, I posted in the wrong thread.  Lockdown making me even sillier than usual.  Anyway, when I asked for a replacement for the taillight bulbs in the Jackal, he recommended those from Amazon and they've been great.  They aren't flashers-- I don't care much for the flashers.  Just personal preference on my part.

I'll see if I can find a link.

That's why I bought them and I abuse the 4 blinks too. If I'm standing on lights, I hit brakes every 5-6 seconds to keep them blinking, until I can confirm that the driver behind me has seen me....
