Follow up post (definitely guzzi content)
« on: May 04, 2020, 10:06:27 AM »
After many hours of trouble shooting the issue of the warning triangle and limp mode, with the assistance of a couple of the guys here in the forum, a conclusion has been made. Everything points to another bad TPS and at this point I hope that is what’s wrong with the 1400.
The reason or the long drawn out process was due to the totally sporadic nature of the way the warning light, limp mode was occurring and length between attacks. Bottom line the on board ECU has thrown the codes PO 155 and 156 from the beginning and that’s the TPS. I found another used one from Canada and intend to install it today. It’s a shame that motorcycle technology  has evolved from a blown motor ending a bikes like to computer technology cost ending a bikes life, well that’s progress.
Wish me luck!!!!

PO 155 and 156 are generic codes for O2 sensors....Of course I  don't know if Guzzi or other bikes have their own codes. Sometimes another issue may cause the code...
Why a used TPS?  Too expensive ?  I would think Guzzi uses off the shelf sensors used on other bikes or cars?

Thanks for the response.
No these TPS sensor are not “off the shelf “ sensors.  Piaggio uses this sensor for several of their models including the 1400 series snd they are 500 bucks, give or take a few bucks and I have been unable to find them being used in any other vehicle, period. They also have a history of issues. This will be the third one in this bike in 8 k miles.
Also the code is specific to the TPS sensor.

Given Guzzi's previous habits, I'd be surprised if your TPS was not another "off the shelf" component. For example, The one for the V7 Classic/Breva 750 is a Magnetti Marelli also used on some Fiats, Alfas, Lanias, Renaults & Dacias. There were also reported to be similar units from half a dozen other manufacturers. Likely to be something that the ECU manufacturer had plenty of at the design time. Of course, from this far away, the research to find alternatives is unlikely to be a trivial exercise.
2010 V7 Classic, 2014 V7 Special
1996 1100 Sport Carb (in NZ), 2004 V11 LeMans (in UK)
Carberry Enfield V-Twin, 2008 Royal Enfield Electra, 2006 RE Electra 535

I have not been able to find this sensor on any other vehicle, car or MC, other than a few of the these  Piaggio bikes.

Update and last word:
I replaced the TPS sensor this afternoon and it was a PITA job, for me anyway. Hooked it to the laptop, reset the parameters and it fired right up with no warning signals and appeared to be running fine. I took it out for a aggressive test ride and at this time, is functioning flawlessly, for now. Do I trust it, this being  the third sensor in less than 8K miles, short answer.....HELL NO.

Thanks Rick, your response means a lot👍 I just don’t want to go through this a third time, I’ll give it away first.
