Storing on side stand

Hi all

I dont post that much, sorry I just read (and learn) but i have this question about storing my 13 Racer. I m noticing that when its cold the right valves keep making this tikking noise for about 10 minutes, than the sound stops. When I asked locally someone told me that that s because I store the bike sideways, (side stand since my bike is not fitted with centre stand) and the right cylinder will empty itself from engine oil, hence the tikking noise. Which in my little knowledge it makes sense. So my question is: do I need a centre stand? Am I doing damage to the valves? And if I infact need a centre stand, is there variations for the v71 models ,since the racer a slightly more swept exhausts.

You can leave the bike on its sidestand. You will not damage the engine. The cylinders are not full of oil. When you start your bike, you should be riding off within a minute or so. Engines warm up to operating temperature quickest under moderate loads, while being ridden. Idling cold engines for extended periods is not an effective way to warm them up. Listening to ticking noises is not a path to happiness.

With a MG both heads are higher then the oil pan. Being leaned on the side makes one a tick higher... but both are up in the air and allowed to drain what little oil is up there. I have seen flat boxer engines seep oil past the rings on the low cyl before and smoke like crazy for a min or two.. maybe thats what they are thinking about.

The OPs issue is valid.  My V7II definitely ticks louder on the right side than the left.  I have no centerstand.  The ticking quiets down after about 10 minutes, just like the OPs bike.  It is still not clear to me why this is, or if it matters, but it is a thing. 
BTW, this has nothing to do with valve adjustment.  I have adjusted mine several times, and it does not change the tick.

The early flying brick BMW's were prone to collecting oil when on the sidestand. Smoke a bit then cleared after warmup. You can't be comfortable with a smoking BMW around a bunch of Brit bike guys!

I could never understand why BMW didn't put the cylinders on the righthand side on the K's. The earlier twins did it too from time to time.  Who knows why BMW does some of the things they do.

My Breva has been stored on the sidestand for the whole 17 years of it's life.

Doesn't affect the engine, trust me.  I certainly wouldn't go to the inconvenience of leaning it against a wall where it might decide to move and go down.

Mine clatters louder on the LEFT side when it's cold. Once it's good and hot (about 10 miles) it evens out and quiets down, although still a VERY loud valvetrain. I just adjusted valve lash too. No difference at all. I'm a new owner and finally getting used to the symphony. Or, maybe, cacophony?

Mine was awful.  Quite embarrassing at times, esp. in mixed (i.e. alternative branded) company.
