V7 Kickstand Locknut...stripped??
« on: July 13, 2020, 10:04:51 PM »
So, in the process of chasing down yet another new noise  that adds character to my bike, I discovered that the lock nut for the side stand retainer pin (bolt) had worked completely loose and was only being held on by the header pipe leaning against it.

I removed the muffler, slid the header out of the way and discovered the first few threads of the lock nut are toast, knackered, buggered up, bollocksed, whatever.  Must have been caused just by vibrating around against the bolt for a few rides. Luckily, the sidestand retainer pin also threads into the kickstand itself and it held, so at least I didn't walk into the garage this evening to find my bike in a compromising position.

The lock nut is in worse shape than the bolt and I thought I'd go to a machinist I've used in the past to see if he can clean up the threads. If not, I don't know how many weeks it  will take to get a new pin and lock nut from Italy. Doesn't seem like the kind of part that a local dealer would stock. If the threads can be cleaned up and I can get it to thread back on, does anyone know why I wouldn't put a drop of blue loctite on it before re-assembly?

Has this happened to anyone else or am I just the lucky winner this week? Thanks!

Best,
Mike

In this instance, I think blue locktite would be prudent.

"knackered, buggered up, bollocksed"  - I'm guessing you may have spent some time in England?

Only to visit. That was just a shout out to international forum members. The good news is my machinist was able to clean up the threads on that lock nut so that I could get it back together. Happy days!

Good save. I've replaced the pivot bolt previously, & don't remember waiting long, but that was back in the days before -, and before the change in national distributor. The previous one tended to keep lots more stock in the country, as does our local dealer. We are blessed.

Since new the stand on my V7 has periodically become very stiff so last time I took it off I decided to shim out some of the play, it seems to be holding better.
I also drilled it for a grease nipple although I haven't put one in yet, haven't found my stash.

Well, I may have celebrated too soon. Re-assembled it and now it doesn't self-lift via spring tension. If I loosen the locknut it will return on it's own, but then the locknut unthreads itself with each swing of the side stand, which defeats the purpose.
I cleaned the parts, greased the pin shaft and threaded it in, then applied a drop of loctite to the locknut threads and tightened it. There's no way to screw this up...it's so simple! For some reason it's got too much friction to operate properly. And by the way, does anyone know why there are two springs instead of just one big one?
Roy, what method did you use to "shim" yours? I'd love to try some other options. Annoying to have to manually lift the stand all the way back every time. Thanks!

Best,
Mike

Holy hell.  It's fixed. Finally sprayed WD40 all over and in between the pivot pin and now it snaps up and down with authority under spring tension. I thought I had that part covered since I greased the pin shaft before re-assembling it. I guess it just need a little help from the WD40 gods.

Thanks for all the input.

Best,
Mike

The pivot pin is shouldered. It would seem that the nut should tighten onto the bottom of the shoulder, without clamping the wings of the stand. It is possible that those wings have been widened somehow. The bracket on the frame rail may be a little deformed as well. On my V7C, the hole in the bracket  has ovalled (intend to fix that next time the frame rail is off with a brass bush), and the bracket had cut a groove in the original pivot pin. The stand's wings were bent out a tad.

On both V7's the stands tend to stick with the build up of road grime. If un-lubed, the one on the V7C will gradually work itself down and activate the cutout switch. I've used a number of different lubricants to free up the pivot, (plain WD40 didn't last long) but chain wax seems to be the best so far. The aerosol type is easiest to apply, and one of those small tins lives in the luggage for long trips. Note that some owners have had success with stronger springs.

Good idea.  I have to spray teflon lube on my stand joint regularly, but a grease nipple would be better.

Slightly off track, but I hate seeing people sitting on bikes with the bike resting on the side stand.  Seems inevitable the pivot will get buggered up (yes I am in UK!)
