Ute, short for utility vehicle. An Australian invention where you take a sedan and integrate a load carrying section on the pack.
It is a close relative to what some may call a pickup, but a pickup has a separate load area.
So if you have a few minutes to spare here is a quick history.
Pull up a stump, not to be confused with putting up stumps, and prepare to be educated.
Apparently the ute came about In 1933.
An Australian farmer’s wife wrote a letter to Ford asking them for a vehicle “to go to church in on a Sunday”
that could also “carry our pigs to market on Mondays.” Ford listened and responded accordingly.
A year later they released the “coupe utility vehicle” that we all know today as the Ute.
Holden, a division of GM got on board in about 1950 with the FX ute.
The last Australian Holden Ute, before GM took a heap of funding from the government and
then in an act of corporate greed decided to shut down production. It looked something like this:
In Australia there are functions called B&S Balls (Batchelor and Spinster)
where young guys and girls will grab their SWAG and put it in the back of the ute with a square bear or two
(you will be asking what that is next) and go and party.
