Sigh. And to think I ride amongst these idiots!
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:43:15 PM »
So today, for the second time in almost as many months, some bleeding idiot ran over my equipment while I was unloading at a gas station!!! 6 safety cones. Hi-vis shirt. Large freaking tractor trailer unloading gasoline at 400 gallons per minute. “What’d I hit?” “I didn’t see anything” I looked as they pulled away from the pump and saw them hit. Full stop on unloading immediately. Prevented gas from entering any drains or spreading very far. The idiot got in his car while I was mitigating the spill and drove away!!! Thank god his car was well grounded or it woulda been warm! Sheesh. And these are the drivers we ride around! I’m telling ya, never ever think for a moment they have a lick of sense!

Done ranting. Fun day.

Today’s fun.

Glad you're still with us .

Not long ago I watched from our porch as a car drove straight through the offset intersection on the South end of the block , over a curb , taking out a stop sign , then driving away .

On Monday I came up on a woman who drove her white Porsche into a giant concrete pillar in the underground parking garage of my office tower.

Pillar had been there 30 years.  Well marked.  Well lighted.

How exactly does one manage to do that?

Wait, wait.  I know.  She was probably a very, very, special important lady.  Who was multitasking on the 7th dimension.  While talking on her phone and shuffling very very important papers in her lap. And drinking a $13 Starbucks carmo mocha white chocolate pumpkin spice almond Frappuccino.

It’s a good thing I don’t judge people or I’d become cynical

The bar to get and keep a drivers license is low, very low. Don't ask me what you have to do to be allowed to have children, it's even easier.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Damn, dude. You get hazard pay?

Around here, Indiana, I can't tell you the number of people I see smoking  and pumping gas.
Or smoking in the car while someone else pumps gas. Or just hanging around the gas station smoking

It's unreal.

I just try to finish up and GTFO before thing start getting, as you said, warm.

The bar is very low.

I’m not gonna get rich. But this spring/summer April thru August we kept the wolves away just on my paycheck while - was going on. Plus I get a safety bonus that is 6% of my annual gross. Incidents like this don’t count against me as I’m not at fault.

Gasoline as a liquid is not as flammable as the vapors. Still highly flammable. But the flash point of vapors is low enough that static electricity from your phone, heat from a cigarette, or heat from a catalytic converter can ignite the vapors, which in turn ignited the fuel. The reason people don’t blow themselves up is because of the vapor return that is built into modern cars evap systems. The small line in the pic is the vapor return line. As the fuel dumps into the underground tank, the vapors are pushed out and returned to my truck. So loaded my tanker is flammable, “empty” it’s explosive bc it’s full of vapors. Everything about my job is related to safety. If I can smell gas fumes something is not right.

And yeah the bar is super low. I see horrific accidents weekly. I see stupidity from other drivers daily. It’s gotten to the point that it’s kinda amusing. Like two weeks ago I had a woman (on her phone) decide to use the turn lane as a merge lane. Only problem was I was occupying it to turn left! I slammed on my brakes, hit the horn, and she gestured at me like I was at fault! Excuse me for being in your way ma’am! Or the driver who was on their phone and started to drift into my lane. I used to horn, not angrily, just as a “honk, I’m here!”, and they started honking at me and swerving and brake checking me! Doesn’t matter, I have a dash cam and plenty of sensors on the rig. Or last week the driver who pulled past the stop line and stopped on the far line of the crosswalk. Then tried moving back and forth to set off the sensors of the light. I felt telling them “the sensors are a full car length behind you, on the other side of the the stop line. Not the crosswalk!” But I didn’t, bc it’s useless. Seriously phone use while driving is an epidemic. I ride and drive for myself and every driver around me, because they’re not to be trusted!

GeorgaGuzzi,
I feel your pain as I hauled gasoline for 20 plus years. One night I'm unloading at a station and I have my 4 way flashers on and the safety cones set up, but still had a driver run over the hoses. He staggers out of his car and sez" you need to have some flares out." Ya, right!. Maybe they need to close the beer joint earlier.

I finished my career hauling chemicals. Sure beats hauling cattle or produce.

Back in the early 70s at the little town of Walton, KS a woman backed into a recently pulled in gas truck knocking off all the all the hose couplers. The whole tank worth went into the sewer system. Good news was it never lit off.

About a month ago, I was riding my Le Mans through upstate Pennsylvania. Stopped for gas in a little no name town near the NY border. As I’m pumping fuel into the Bike, a guy smoking a cig, saunters up to me, about a foot away. I told him to get away from me with that cigarette. He must have gotten the message, he scurried away quickly.

I think this  ^^^ is the key to most of what you see.

It's that you just can't IMAGINE how f****** IMPORTANT these peoples' time is, compared to yours.   They HAVE to be "multi-tasking" (something that only very smart and very important people are capable of) as they go down the road.   They have important relationships compared to yours, important jobs.

And if they come into your lane, or run over something, or run into you from behind, it's YOUR fault for not appreciating their importance relative to the rest of society ...

It explains a lot, not just peoples' behavior behind the wheel.

I was concerned when I read that someone had run over your equipment while you were unloading. Then I saw it had to do with your fuel delivery. Still concerned.

It's obvious to me that the Chinese have put something in our water supply, because people are getting stupider by the day.  Scary.

Realize that when you're in the grocery store surrounded by morons that can't manage a shopping cart, never look behind them, and seem oblivious to the fact that they're not the only one in the store, they got there by driving in a car.  Truly frightening.

When I read the part about "ran over my equipment" my hips twitched reflexively, about the same time "wow!  that's gotta hurt!" flashed into my brain!

Good to read farther and find out I was wrong.

Dusty,

I read somewhere that if you post something on an Internet forum, it is almost impossible for people to ignore it, and they are very good at following simple directions.
