Trouble Shipping California 1400 Touring

I just received my Nero Gentleman today.  It should be a very happy time.  But the bike arrived with a dead battery (that is on the dealer) and with my right mirror MISSING that could have been stolen in transit.  The people who delivered the bike from the nj terminus were rude and had no answers about the missing mirror.  Fortunately i used Motorcycle Shippers and bought the insurance ....they will see to it that I am made whole again.  The trouble is, while the battery is an in stock item the mirror is not,  Jeremy at Motoplex West Chester, PA says it could take up to 60 days so now If I want to ride i have to buy a mirror or a set of mirrors so they match.

Does your state require two mirrors?  Many only require one.

If two are needed then now is the time to make the bike your own with some custom mirrors.  Life's too short to sweat the small stuff.

I think the mirrors are largely the same across models. Contact a dealer and ask if they have any take offs. I got the impression that Cadre' may have some during a conversation a while back, but I cannot say for certain.

Amazon is your friend - put some cheap mirrors on temp and wait for the originals....

I would have no problem riding with 1 mirror for a while.  Many of my old bikes have 1 mirror and you adapt to it almost simultaneously

When I bought my 16 Eldo, it too arrived with a dead battery. Call to dealer got another sent. NOS has NOS battery, unfortunately. Trying to get the old one to charge up, caused a whole slew of gremlins so heads up

Those mirrors look very similar to those on the late-model smallblocks (like my V7 I and V7III).

If the mounting thread is the same (likely), and the stems are similar in length (no idea) then I have AT LEAST two extra sets of take-offs from mine that you can use free of charge if you can get the 2 hours down here to Medford.

It's possible one or more of the other NJ guys are closer to you and might also have something you can borrow.

I'd run a set up to you but I won't be free until at least mid-day on Saturday between this brave new world of "home" schooling my kids (supporting virtual school with their district) and soccer games and what not.

I've shipped bikes across the country about 5 times.  I've used Federal, and Fun Movers, and Haul Bikes.  Always have had some damage, each and every time.  Sometimes major (Ducati strapped down with the stand deployed and straps criss-crossed over the tank, ruining the paint) (Honda VFR retention straps pulled out of the pallet, allowing the forks to twist) to minor (side bag blemishes are almost a certainty, even when I protect them with foam padding). I've had mirrors knocked loose from their mountings (watching the left mirror on my K1200gt try to unscrew itself as I rode down the LA freeway was interesting!) but never actually missing.  After my experiences, I would never ship a valuable classic or collectable bike on an open pallet with any of the major freight forwarders.  They are all the same and treat your bike the same way they would treat a crate of bowling balls.

I'm with Kev. Same mirrors that came on my '07 Norge, my 1400, and my V7III. I'll wager there is someone with a set sitting on a shelf taking up space.

Good advice. 

No manufacturer ships new bikes fully assembled and strapped to a open pallet.   They're all in a crate, with ancillaries removed and nothing sticking out.  Properly secured within a good crate, you can stand it on either end and the bike does not move.  The best ones can even be tipped over on the side and nothing moves.  Whenever I've shipped bikes nationally & internationally, they have either been partially disassembled & within a salvaged manufacturer crate or completely disassembled within another container. 

Dead battery? I wouldn't leave a battery in the bike because I wouldn't want the risk of a broken case spilling acid on my bike or other materials  in transit.

Good bolt-together motorcycle shipping metal crates used to be free for the taking at dealerships.  Now it's not as simple now but they can still be had.  I would expect some loss or damage with anything shipped open on a pallet, especially with an ltl mover, an then be happy if it wasn't damaged.  Using a independent vehicle transporter only carrying 1-2 bikes at a time typically costs much more per mile for a reason.
