Alex was also the host of the National Geographic Bee from 1989 until 2013. Unfortunately I never got to meet him, even though he was at a party in the NGS Membership Center Building where I worked.

Alex didn't consider his job as work,  he loved what he did. I for one will miss him. BTW Ken Jennings was on tonight giving answers on marine biology.

alex made it cool to be smart.  he did his act with class and dignity.  he was around for so long that many 30 somethings grew up watching the show.  he was surely well set for money for several lifetimes, but the fact that he worked right up to his death says a great deal about his character. in tumultuous times, his voice of calm reason will be missed.
