I once met an old guy who used to be a moto driving instructor in Europe using that old Bohmerand machine.  Had articulated steering so that student was in front and he had duplicate full control from the rear seat.  He was intrigued by the static rear bars on my Guzzi SuperAlce.

I love the Maico!

The integration of the spare tire into the rear valance is brilliant

The Maico front end looks similar to a Hienkel Tourist scooter, very German, looks damn solid.

Those Mobile's are, unfortunately, quite rare and expensive.  Pretty good bikes, though.

I have one of the next model, the 1962 Maicoletta, which is pretty gonzo for an old scooter -- 277cc 2-stroke and 14-inch wheels.

I also have a 1960 Heinkel Tourist, much slower, -- about the same weight, a bit over 300 lbs, but the Heinkel has a 175cc OHV 4-stroke.  Very solid scoot, though -- my Heinkel has about 80K miles on it total (25K when I bought it, the rest mine).

When I lived in Aachen, Germany (2004-2005), we used to see groups of these large, "restored", vintage scooters (Maico / Zundapp / Goggo / Heinkel / Simpson, etc.) like this, on tour....and motoring through the countryside.   

Way cool...and many were riding two up...with the wooden picnic baskets on the back, etc.

Really a hard call. Found a video where the vehicle was ridden at a greater speed. Vehicle was steered (not countersteered) in the turns. I did catch slight glimpses of daylight under the inboard wheel on some turns.

No, that would be an exaggeration.  Flat out on level ground, 75mph for sure, 80mph maybe.
That's pretty good for a scooter of the period.  Vespa's fastest at the time was the GS160, which was good for 65mph.  The Heinkel will do 65mph, through good aerodynamics, but it takes a while to get there, and hills slow it a fair bit.

Thanks for posting.  I believe this very fast machine was designed by a Swiss sailplane designer, and incorporated many components from the 'flying brick' BMW K100, including the entire compact drive system (engine/clutch/tranny/Monolever final drive.)
