grip heaters, don't...NGC

 I tend to put grip heaters on all my bikes.the ones that go under the grip, I have used Kimpix and the ones hat go in the bars with great results. On my KLX250S I put on a set that I got from Cycle Gear their house brand and they do not put out much heat they do get warm but just around 110 which when cold you can't really feel through my gloves. They are wired from a keyed hot wire through a relay. I have and LED tail light to save some watts. They got good reviews. Just wondering if some how I wired them wrong. Kind of hard to do. And yes I put some shrinks tubing on the bar under the heating wires.

 That's what these are. This style always worked well for me in the past. They are cheap and always there and you can use whatever grips you like. I may just pull them off and get a name brand pair.

4 years ago I put on OXFORD heated grips. Love them! 5 heat settings and they shut off automatically when no vibration is detected.

Shut off with no vibration , they'll never work on my Eldorado then :) .  Peter

Actually, once in a blue moon while cruising down the hiway on my 1200 Sport, the red light on the handlebar mounted Oxford heater control unit will start blinking because it’s not detecting vibration... An amazingly smooth engine. But a few seconds later, it detects vibration and the the heat in the grips continues. It doesn’t happen that often but I’m amazed that a 2 cylinder can run that smooth!

Buy heated gloves and a vest instead, and you can then jump from bike-to-bike as long as you add an appropriate pigtail. The generic Cycle Gear product is affordable, and effective enough...particular ly, the vest.

What year KLX and does it have electric leg? IMO it unlikely to have the electrical system to support heated grips things like ignition are typically taken car of by a CDI setup and are not connected to the 12volt system. While leds give you a bit back other than a halogen headlight bulb most of them draw releatively modest amounts of power anyway, anything with a heating element draws lots.

I put grip heaters on all my bikes, too.  I'm sure you've double checked your wiring, and made certain of a good ground?  I've never been impressed with the less expensive type that uses a resistor for the low setting, I've swapped to the Symtec 210019 and choose rocker or toggle switch depending on where I'll put it.  Good luck, grip heaters are a must-have for me.

I don't go out of my way to ride in cold weather. The grip heaters on the Norge work well and as has been noted it is kind of like a fireplace, can only warm one side. However the biggest help the heaters have turned out to be is to reduce arthritic pain in my hands on extended rides. I generally have them on low even in very warm weather and they make a significant difference in my hand comfort.

 Those Symtec look good. Thinking about I think I used those on my KLR650 I had 13 years ago. I like the Oxford but don't like the grips.

I also have Oxford grips on my Audace. I didn't know that they functioned on vibration. I assumed they shut down when they detected that voltage went from ~14volts down to ~12.7 as when the bike is shut off. You know what they say, never assume anything.

I think they detect 13+ volts meaning the engine is running and shut down a few minutes after shutting the engine down. the center light will also start flashing if not enough volts on Oxfords. Ask anyone with a V7III.

The Kimtex works well and will hook right up to the Stelvios wiring for the H grips and the V85 too. Some of the cheap Chinese ones don't put out enough juice. not worth saving $10. on.

Same here, I liked the Oxford's heat but didn't like the way the grips felt at all.  Best I've found to use with heaters are the Progrip 714, plenty of cushion but let the heat come on thru.

Love the heated grips on the Stelvio, and between them and the hand-guards, i wear my summer gloves year around. And it does help the arthritis pain and keep my fingers flexible. I rarely have them higher than the second level.

Oxford recommends wearing lighter gloves with their grips which makes good sense.

I'm very happy with the Oxford product on my Mille. I wondered about the capacity of the Saprisa alternator especially when paired with a lightweight battery, so to keep total amps reasonable I changed to LED lights all around. Also changed to a Euro-spec left-side combo switch so I can start the bike with the lights off.
