Trailer hitch on a Stelvio??
« on: January 03, 2021, 04:32:11 AM »
I doubt there is anything available for the Stelvio as far as a trailer hitch goes, but I have a trailer hitch on my Goldwing for an old trailer i used to use.  I am thinking of buying a new trailer like this one;  https://theusatrailerstore.com/lumina-motorcycle-trailers/

Anybody know how/who/where or if, I could get a hitch installed on my 2013 Moto Guzzi Stelvio?  Thanks ahead of time for any help!

I see Goldwings pulling trailers all the time out on the highway. I just can't imagine the dynamics of one of those things in a panic stop. Bringing an 800-900 lbs motorcycle to a safe halt is challenging enough.

I actually saw a home made setup on a Stelvio. Don't remember owners name, though he bought the bike from Sloans and made this contraption for it. It looked scary...
I think I posted a pic of it a long time ago here.
May have better luck finding a hitch setup for your chopper :boozing:

Anything is possible.  There was a long thread over on ADV a couple of years back (The Ulysses Odyssey to Homer) about a guy that towed a sailboat  behind his Buell Ulysses.

Yes, as I recall he had a few breakdowns along the way.  As a Uly owner, I could have told him he'd have much better luck hoisting the sail and having the boat tow the Buell!  (Just kidding!)

These are a couple pics showing how I 'Roll'.
Tuned right, the 2003 EVT Hydro engine is a true WORKHORSE.
The chair is a first series Coupe Royale built by Rd Milray
That's an 88 Bunkhouse trailer that my son Thomas and I have visited 26 different States and Canada twice with.
The cargo trailer is a Harbor Freight 48" x 48" that I had narrowed to 36" so that it will 'fit wherever the EVT fits' when using it with the two weather-tight cargo boxes I mount to it.

Yes all the hand wringing is true to a point.
I however, believe that I'm going out one day and choose to provide my handicapped Son and I every bit of LIFE we can experience before doing so.

Awesome point.  Life is short!  My home built trailer is also a HF 48x48 narrowed, that I pulled for years with my Gold Wing.  Time for a different trailer as that one is getting worn out (25 years old and showing its age).  Im still going to look around for a trailer hitch for the Stelvio, but I really dont think any are available.  I guess I could talk to a fabricator.  Anyways I can continue to use my Gold Wing to pull a trailer so I dont NEED a Stelvio hitch.  More of a want.  When my wife comes along i call it the make-up and souvenir storage box!  lol.

Anyways thanks for the pics of your hack and trailer!  Ride safe!!   :bike-037:

Nice setup but i would have to get connector/hardware fabricated by a fabricating shop as they dont have any for a Guzzi.  I will keep my Gold Wing for my trailer hauling.  Thanks for the link though as it is a cool setup if i ever own a bike that they make setup for.

FWIW, I briefly considered a streamlined bubble trailer on my Norge (for SWMBO makeup and storage :thewife:) back in 2016, feedback from Roper and others was was that the CARC main swingarm bushings were not well suited to towing or adding a hack. YMMV

Several years back, I saw a Norge with a trailer hitch at "National" Guzzi Rally in Canada. I don't know any details. Perhaps someone here knows more about it.

Don't let anyone say no. I towed trailers with a number of bikes for many years, and it worked out well.

Just do this, Make sure that the ball (pivot/pin/whatever) is is as lot and as far forward as possible. The farther up, and rearward, the more it will screw with the handling. Likely even dangerous. So whatever the design, verify it is a low and far ward as practical.

Also, keep in mind that the motor has no thermostat, so it will be running hotter then designed and you need to keep that in mind for extended high speeds. That motor has a separate oil pump to keep the exhaust valve area cooled with oil, but still.......
