Cold start lever function? Or, glowing headers!
« on: January 16, 2021, 09:47:14 PM »
So what exactly does the fast idle lever do? On my Quota, which has efi, I figured it was just a way to increase the idle. The other night I started my bike up after getting mostly layered up. I put on my two jackets, neck gaiter, and helmet and when I walked to my bike the header pipes were glowing slightly cherry red! I put the fast idle lever back to zero and they cooled right off. Moderately concerning. I didn’t think I had it idling that long. Prolly did tho.

Anyway, fast idle lever, enrichment circuit or no? Just “idle” curiosity! Hah!

I’ve seen it before, air cooled engines. It doesn’t seem right but if all the tuneup stuff is correct, it’s a ‘feature’.  ride it to cool the pipes is all you can do.
The fast idle lever holds the butterfly’s open a little but that’s all it does. The ecu adjusts mixture and timing according to its map and signals from the engine temperature probe, the ambient air pressure & temperature, engine rpm and throttle position sensor.

Thank you. I was hoping that was the case. I’ll be sure to check out the video.

The lever just bumps the idle speed.

Double check to be sure that you don't have a sooted up spark plug.  A misfire will send raw fuel out to burn in the pipe. Maybe the TPS or idle trim are a bit too rich even.

But I suspect all is well and that is just they way a single wall exhaust pipe is going to be. Just don't idle for too long, that is not a good thing.

If you read manual, you can adjust it to 3500rpm fully warmed up. Then it is to work correctly cold.      At least you didn't run in & take a shower while it's warming up, like a guy w/V7.

A friend (oral surgeon) spaced out and left his '03 Bonneville running on the center stand in his garage with the high idle on for 15 minutes. New engine time...
