« on: February 05, 2021, 05:54:48 PM »
Piston ring supplies in Australia seem to have dried up . spoken to all suppliers here and no luck. With postage from the states taking forever I'm trying to source locally Any one in Australia have a set of piston rings for 850 Eldorado 83mm std bore.. 2.00mm top 2.5mm 2nd  and 5mm oil  that are surplus to requirements. Alternatively who is a good reliable manufacturer here that can make me a set.  Thanks Bill

Who have you asked Bill? Postage is only about 3 or 4 weeks unless those f wheats at USPS keep sending your parcel back to sender. Don't ask.

Hi  Stubbie, Mario's always my first contact he nearly always has what I need and tried to make a set up for me out of his bits and pieces but no go . tried all the others Motociclo, don newell  eurobrit and others that I know ,Spoke to Teo Lammers in Victoria the other day and said he could help but not with the oil rings so might be just as easy to get some made and theres a few companies about in aus but don't know which one is best. Ill work on it and yes postage for me is sometimes good and sometimes not good , my last choice. Cant even get Gilardonis at the moment .

There's a few sets of 83mm ring sets  on Ebay from the  UK. Do Guzzis use common grey cast iron top rings ?

can use plain top ring , this motor has cast liners and would prefer chrome top ring, plain cast ring will wear in quicker and probably not last as long but beggars cant be choosers

Ill work on it and yes postage for me is sometimes good and sometimes not good , my last choice. Cant even get Gilardonis at the moment .

I spent many hours searching through ring manufacturers catalogues for rings for 90mm bore Daytona engines and 95mm bore. Lots and lots of hours spent. The info is out there but when you consider the bore dia,the ring material the ring shape the ring coating/or not the ring thickness the ring depth and the fact that .003" in the bore affects ring gap by .001 or something from memory there are a LOT variables and information to wade through. Then you can look at the same for the oil control rings.
TLM was selling replacement ring packs for centy/Daytona engines they had sourced locally in Holland but the second ring wasn't a Napier style ring but a plain ring. I emailed them for some info on the second ring choice but they never replied. Originally they never mentioned this in their advertising and I wasn't necessarily comfortable with the plain second ring as its primarily an oil scraper so I went looking. I also want to build a 95mm bore engine so that was another reason. Cant help you I'm afraid but it might be easier to get a batch made and sell off the surplus.

Ciao

Yea, 3 is pretty close, I use 3.142 or 22/7 (true decimal goes forever, fraction easier to enter).355/113 for better

A Bubble discovered it some time ago just playing with string apparently. My kids learnt it as the four ‘n twenty rule ( a witty Australian primary school teacher).

Ray, try Trevor McGregor http://pacificengineparts.biz/contact/ if you haven’t already,
I actually got these rings from Mario only a couple of months ago, maybe his last set ?
But Trevor has huge stock, I would have tried him next

Thats the company that supply the non OEM rings for TLM for the Centauro and Daytona that use a plain second ring seems to be of identical shape and material to the top ring instead of a cast iron Napier style. I emailed them for some info but never got a reply.

To my knowledge on Daytona/Centauro, MGS-01 and the V11 series around 30 years ago.

Maybe it was a --19 derived issue. I might try contacting them again.

I spoke with Trevor from Pacific Engine parts, very helpful but could not supply 83mm oil rings, been through ebay, harpers MG, and others that advertise 83mm rings but all different face width to mine, may have to look for complete piston and rings. Still waiting to hear back from the Netherlands,  Bill

thanks huzo im still waiting for a reply from THN in the Netherlands and spoke to  Teo Lammers but he  hasn't got back to me yet and hes a good bet for the hard stuff so will wait another day or two. I have the top and second rings and the second ring is a napier ring  which  is a good oil ring in itself and had distant thoughts of using the old oil rings and hoping the napier rings might be able to keep up and do the job but I cant really stoop that low yet NO NO NO what am I thinking    :violent1:

If you've got an oil ring that really close you might be able to get the oil ring groove in the piston machined a fraction to take that ring.
