Everyone was contacting me wondering how my son was.  He is on the north island up in the hills closer to the east coast.

When we finally contacted him, he said he had just heard about it.  Never felt anything.

I guess it was off the coast so it was big wave warnings.  Wonder how many surfers headed for the coast.

Kiwi Checking In!

We live on the East Coast of the North Island in Hawke's Bay. The initial quake woke us up at 0227hrs on Friday. It seemed to go on for a long time and was centred about 300km northeast of us out in the Pacific. Parts of the coast received tsunami warnings shortly after but this was cancelled a couple of hours later.

The 7.4 and 8.1 quakes were near the Kermadec Islands, about 900km north east of New Zealand. Tsunami warnings were issued again and evacuation orders made for a large part of the coastline from the very top almost to the bottom of the North Island. Around 1030hrs there was some unusual wave action and strange currents but no damage. It was all over by about 1430hrs and people were able to return to their homes.

There were no reports of damage or injury. There were, however, some very tired and stressed people around and it was great to get a good sleep free from rocking and rolling.

As it happens my daughter and I are heading around East Cape on Monday on our bikes and will be going by some of the areas with the strange currents. Here's hoping for no more big quakes!

Good to hear everyone is doing fine.  Enjoy your ride!

I thought it was strange when my son told me the house he is building is going to have a brick façade.  I wouldn't think that would do well with earthquakes.
