Ever Vigilant, Motorcyclist dies after hit by two cars
« on: March 07, 2021, 12:03:33 PM »
I don't know how many drunk drivers you've seen on the road but I've seen far to many in 5 decades of driving / riding.

Quote
A motorcyclist is dead after being hit by two cars on I-5 Saturday night, California Highway Patrol officials said......Officers say the motorcyclist was switching lanes with a driver in a BMW rear-ended him.....he driver of the BMW was arrested for DUI and booked at Sacramento County Main Jail.

Let's be aware that we can see DUI's even midday and let's be careful when out on the super slabs.

A great teacher and wonderful human being was nearly killed and left physically and cognitively disabled about seven years ago when she was hit head-on at highway speeds by a 7:30 am drunk. What a waste.

A few years ago, I was out riding in the morning, around 9:00 when I came upon a police roadblock.  When I pulled up and asked, "What's up?" They said they were running a sobriety checkpoint. I laughed and said, "a little early to be catching drunks, isn't it?"  I was stunned when the cop replied, "we've already arrested three!"

Could be this one about 2 weeks ago.  https://abc7.com/el-monte-hit-and-run-motorcyclist-killed-deadly-crash-lower-azusa-road/10359008/

According to the vid, he looks kind of fast for a city street.  He didn't hit his brakes and his rear tire is bald.  The rider is 56 yrs. old but maybe a novice rider.

For me, the scariest part of the story was “I-5.”  Drunk drivers come out of nowhere, but those multi-lane multi-tasking speedways terrify me.  If I never ride one again I’ll feel just fine.

I figured he did except out here, in Sacramento, BMW's are usually going 85+ in heavy traffic.

As Paul Harvey used to say, here's the rest of the story:

Quote
A 67-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver who was texting behind the wheel on Interstate 5 in Sacramento on Saturday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

I haven't seen a DUI checkpoint in a couple of Decades.

The impaired drivers are not only found on interstate highways, I find them every time I am out on back roads - cutting curves, crossing centerlines, etc, etc, etc.  Be careful out there!

They use to.  I know they exist in this County but where is another story.  I haven't seen one in over 5 years but then again I'm not looking for them either.

I was surprised that it was a sobriety checkpoint...especi ally at that hour!  I have no idea what criteria departments use to decide to set one up. Slow day? Recent bad DUI accident?  I seem to run across one about every five years or so here in the southern states. Wouldn't bother me a bit if they were more frequent.  I remember one where I had already stopped waiting in line, when a car a half mile or so back slowed and whipped a U-turn.  A patrol car shot out after it in pursuit, siren wailing and lights flashing.  They weren't messing around.

They do sobriety checkpoints here only when the PD gets some grant money for the overtime. Haven't seen one in my AO in ten years.

Early morning is a well trodden path here in the UK especially during the Festive Season, Christmas and New Year

Many people will go out to a party and have too much, then get up and drive to work in the morning unaware that they're still over the limit

Police here catch a lot of people that way
