Breva 750 TPS and Harleys

Thanks to numerous previous threads on the forum I was able to work out that I had a faulty Throttle Position Sensor. Several of the threads mentioned that a Harley one will do the job but I could not find any that actually gave the part number.

It is 27629-01A.

This will be of interest to anyone who is not financially carefree. The Guzzi parts place I go to here in Oz suggested about $AUD400 and a lengthy wait. They're listed at Guzzi suppliers in the USA for $AUD290 and the UK for $AUD230. The Harley joint near here (in a relatively minor country town) had one in stock for $AUD60.

It is exactly the same unit: A Marelli PF1C. It's common to a range of Ducatis, Harleys and European cars. I hope this saves someone else a bit of money.

Magneti Marelli ECU part 219244300500 and 40406202 is the part no. from Magneti M, that made the parts for both Guzzi and Harley.  Used in many older Euro cars like Alfa R, Fiat, Renault.

There was a thread on the V11S forum where someone found the MM part for a dollar if you bought enough of them.. I can't imagine where they are made..or how good the QC is. You know, it *might* be the OEM manufacturer, and MM just buys them for a dollar..

Really good to know. I've a possibly suspect TPS on my Cafe Classic. For $60 it'd be worth buying one to see if it solves my mystery fault. Cheers.

We picked up an out-of-state couple on a Yamaha Stratoliner with a broken drive belt...... that same belt that fits 1985 - 1999 Harleys. 
LOL - they broke down within sight of our local Harley dealer.  OEM Yamaha = $450.  Over the counter at Harley Dealer (Genuine Harley) = $202.

There's some instructions on drilling a hole in your old TPS and cleaning it.  Reportedly it extends the life of the old unit and buys you some time.

With the cheaper Harley units available I don't see the need, but I can dig up the article if you want.

From what Malik told be, they can get a worn flat spot but if it's knackered cleaning it can't hurt it so please pass on the link. Thanks Joe.

Thanks for that. In regards to that thread, my bike was running terribly and sprayed some lube on the outside of the TPS and bike has run great for the last few rides. Have already changed plugs, caps, leads, O2 sensor and coils. Malik is going to test TPS for me but now the bike is running well will probably show normal.

For those curious about what's going on inside the TPS here are some photos:

The black ring on the bottom can be levered out.




Here's what's inside:




Two contacts run along metallic strips that are around the inside of the drum.






It is all very clean in there and lubricated with a white grease. It appears that one contact was rubbing a bit harder than the other but I can't see any obvious cause for failure. My advice, if you're going to drill a hole to spray stuff in, is to drill it at about 3 o'clock (below where the connector goes), well out towards the edge and only just pierce the plastic. The metallic strips don't go around there but too deep and you'll likely damage the mica-like stuff the strips are mounted on.

Update on this topic.

My Breva 750 developed an intermittent flutter at light throttle around 4000 rpm. The consensus from my consultants was that the TPS was at fault. I used the Harley part number (first post) to order on-line from Frasers here in Sydney.  AUD76 incl freight - half the price of the MG item. The part arrived THE NEXT DAY (!!!), and it was an easy install. I reset the TPS.

I took it for a run yesterday and all is fixed. Thanks to HZBLOKE for the part number.
