Chrome Cylinders- So Glad I Listened
« on: April 02, 2021, 10:08:00 PM »
I can’t tell you how hard it was for me to spend the money on these Gilardoni cylinders. Bike runs fine, no smoke and power seams fine. I kept reading “it’s not if but when” the chrome fails. I thought it won’t happen to me, I take care of my bikes. Took the left side off my new to me 73 Eldorado with less then 10,000 miles. Chrome looked perfect, oh man I waisted my money. Took off the right side and.... oh “shoot” look at that. Wow am I glad I bought these new ones.

So, now I ordered another set for my T. Because now I am a believer in “it’s not if but when“ they flake.

The job, honestly, really was a piece of cake.

Many moons ago, my Ambo was the same way. One side perfect the other was just pealing off.

Glad you caught it!

Quite a few years ago when I was brand new to the forum with a new to me 73 V7 Sport a forum member stressed that I replace the cylinders with Gilardonis.  I had just emptied my wallet and then some to get the bike and abhorred the idea of laying out another large chunk of change, but I did do it.  Just like you I averted disaster.  Congrats on doing the right thing.

I bought my '72 Eldo with 20k miles from the original owner in 2010, he told me the bores were fine.  One of the first things I did was verify cylinder condition and of course, the bores were flaking.  I pulled the engine and replaced the cylinders but was surprised by the amount of sludge in the crank sludge trap for a bike with such low mileage.

When I opened up the infamous "Monte Carlo" Guzzi, the sludge trap was so packed I literally had to drill it out.
