hip replacement one week from today

Frankly guys, it has gotten so bad I can't ride anymore. So, it couldn't be soon enough. They told me it was going to be 8 months out 2 1/2 months ago but they must have opened up the elective surgeries here in California as they scheduled me for next week. I know some of you guys have had it done and it was successful so, I am looking forward to it. I don't know when I will be back in the saddle but "I'll be back".

When you are in this much pain it is something to look forward to!  Until that point I wanted to put it off as long as possible, and then one day you can't get it done soon enough.  Good luck!  My new hip feels like a teenager.  The rest of me not so much but the hip feels like one.

You will love it!  I remember asking about after surgery pain and was told "Most patients think the after surgery pain is less than the pre-surgery pain, so hardly anyone mentions pain after surgery."

3 days after surgery before going up or down stairs, I had to stop and think "Now, which hip did they replace again?  Oh yeah, the right one!"

Thanks guys for the replies and it is quite painful to say the least. Approximately how long did it take for you to get back up in the saddle? I know there was another thread on this but...

I had the advantage of having mine done at the end of the riding season, but it was about 2 or 3 months before I felt mentally comfortable straddling a motorcycle and taking a ride.  You will be riding a stationary bike within 2 weeks for PT.  You also need the confidence that enough "knitting" has occurred to give you peace of mind that you wont damage anything.  Your doctor can give you guidance on this. 

I am 8 months out now and feel totally comfortable kick starting my old bikes.

Absolutely True. The stronger you are before, the quicker the recovery. I had my hip replaced last March, and took my first short ride on Memorial Day weekend. Was back to normal riding by June.

A lot of depends upon what procedure they do whether they're doing the anterior of posterior anterior (front) supposedly has a much quicker recovery but I wasn't a good candidate for it given my injuries.

I found my PT sessions with the therapist mostly useless after the second week. I did all the exercises at home and my surgeon suggested I walked as much as possible.

In my case I had other significant injuries to my hip including torn hip flexor tendons and IT band so it took me about a year to fully recover. Now other than the scar I completely forget I had total joint replacement. The knee was much easier, I was back in action within a month.

So good, I Went on a 15 mile hike with my daughter in the Rockies yesterday.

No more running though.....

If you go by how you feel, you might want to ride home from surgery!  But don't.  The big after surgery concern is falling.  I was told you have 50% structural strength after surgery and 100% within 3 weeks.  Kinda like letting concrete cure.

YMMV.  Ask your surgeon.

Had my right hip replaced in January 2018. Like you the pain was so bad could barely walk. Went in for surgery in the morning and was out in the afternoon. Was walking down the hospital hallway right after waking up and the feeling of NO MORE PAIN was wonderful!!

The recovery process is crucial...as said before you will feel like you can ride now but don't. Listen to your Doctors.

That being said I was told no riding for 6 weeks. After 4.5 weeks couldn't stand it and went for a very short ride. Everything felt great!

Definitely go for the front procedure if you can.

Got mine done 2 1/2 weeks ago. Feel like I am past the worst pain from recovery. The PT hurts, but the pain stops when you're done. So you get a big break pain free between PTs! I feel better now that I don't have the constant nagging pain the worn out knee caused me 24/7.
I was taking 2-3 Tramadol a day for the knee pain before the operation. I stopped the Oxy two weeks after the replacement and now take 1-2 Tramadol a day for the knee pains. And I feel like I'll be taking even less soon. Gets better every day!
Hope your surgeon and after care was as excellent as mine was! Good luck.
