Good stuff! I learned the correct jam nut installation from an old marine mechanic as a teenager. Boats with inboard engines use two nuts, thick and thin, on the prop shaft.

Spring washers aren't allowed on aircraft for the obvious reason. They will eventually fracture, and locking tension will be lost.

Some good info here on the fasteners we all use.

https://engineerdog.com/2015/01/11/10-tricks-engineers-need-to-know-about-fasteners/

I disagree with several of those findings, therefore the the piece is all wrong.

Seriously, fascinating reading.  Thanks for posting.

Kathi asked me what I was doing while watching one of the videos referenced there -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ne19-3vkJg.

I let her watch about 30 seconds of a nut loosening from vibration.  I said that there were several more examples that were even more interesting.

She gave me The Look and left the room.

On the same thread, she thought you were nuts and so she bolted.

Brilliant.

OK, a tad sick, too.

OTOH, Kathi laughed when I read these to her.  Not enough to ask to see the vids, but laughed.

Interesting on the split lock washers. The article states that the washer will not dig in. Maybe not in all cases, but I have had the side of a nut against the washer have a very sharp raised chip that I believe is from the lock washer.

Ok.  After Rink Rat’s response, this thread clearly needs to be locked tight by a moderator.

I suggest red
