Gave the gift of life today.
« on: August 07, 2021, 03:15:18 PM »
Riding down the road today on the way to the grocery store I saw the blood mobile had a drive going at a local church. Turned the bike around, pulled in and donated a pint. It felt good to do good :thumb:

You impreganted who?  Whoops, my bad, I misinterpreted the title.

Good on you!  Not only good for the receiver, but also good for the donor.  Donating blood every few months lowers your blood pressure.

When I was in the Army I found out while giving blood I was O negative. I was assigned to an Army Hospital where I gave blood as often as permitted. Guys were being maimed in Vietnam, it was the least I could do. I can't donate anymore for a couple of reasons.

In basic training there was one trooper who refused to participate in the company's blood letting. A couple of days later he "happily" participated. The "pressure" probably became unbearable. I remember that he was AB which made it worse.

I gave the gift of life while out riding too!   Came upon a turtle trying to cross the road, it was surly going to smashed before it made it across.   I quickly pulled over and got him to the other side, I felt great.

I am O neg with missing some factor, which means it can be given to babies still in the womb.  Evidently only 2% of the O neg population where this happens.

Had to stop when I was put on some nasty meds, and by the time they had finished I was too old to donate.  The nurse that gave me the bad news was most upset about having to turn me down.  I would get "the call" on the very day I was eligible to donate again as there were very few of us around.  Actually I found that it actually made me quite upset that I could not donate, as I have a nephew who is alive today because he had the complete blood flush while still in the womb.

I have my 10 gallon pin.  I used to do apheresis donations every 2 weeks (I'm O pos and what they called "mega neg", which made it ideal for those with leukemia or going through bone marrow transplants).  I loved donating but then got a permanent deferral when liver function was off (I was temporarily taking high dose of acetaminophen after a "procedure" and no one warned me until it was too late).  15 years later the "permanent deferral" was recanted but then I got prostate cancer.  Cancer is gone but not sure what my donation status is now.  Can cancer survivors donate blood?  I should go check...

Good on all you givers and all the turtle savers. In conjunction with giving I take no issue stopping a ride to move turtles off the road. Last one was about a 12lb alligator snapper who didn't think he needed my help. Boxers are much more compliant. They just hole up whereas the snapper wanna fight. No matter its worth it

B+.  Gallon + donor.  Have not given since retired.  It takes them a couple or three  shots to dig into my arm.

My blood donation history is somewhat bitter sweet.
Within a year of being on active duty in the USAF, there was a call for O-neg blood where I was stationed at the time, RAF Upper Heyford, UK. I gladly offered to give, and did, but a couple of days later, the clinic called to advise me that my O neg blood stated in my medical records was actually O pos type!!

I was glad that I had had no need for a transfusion, and continued to donate periodically until 1986. And, at least, since my wife and children were also all O pos, all of us would be available to each other, in case a transfusion would be needed.

But after that, I was permanently denied from donating due to my exposure to the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident in 1986.
I was stationed in Germany, at that time, and since then, I still cannot donate.

Hi all,                                                                                                          8-8-21

I used to sponsor blood drives for over 20 years in my local community.  I give whenever I am able.  I told my kids not to give me Christmas or birthday presents anymore...just donate to the Red Cross in my name.  They do and I'm happy for it.

Thanks so much to all who have donated in any way...and YES, you have saved lives by doing so!

Be well, stay well,
DougG

It was fun while it lasted. I used to travel all over north America and western Europe. When ever 'I timed out' I'd find a place to donate; 'til I had to give it up. It was likely ~ 55 - 60 gallons of A+. A few times I jumped the gun by a week or 2. An obvious no, no- - - it was my grandmother then an aunt, in the '50's, both w/out insurance.

Restaurants in the town where I grew up would give a steak dinner to whomever donated; Bars a shot of whiskey. 1950's   R3~
